lie in court for!

At the end of an evening of good food and good wine a group of my very old friends started to talk about what friendship really meant.

One friend said that he would lie in court for any one of us

Who would you lie in court for (if anyone)!

nutcracker Thu 10-Mar-05 22:56:55

My kids.

Don't know about friends depends what it was over.

lavenderrr Thu 10-Mar-05 22:57:07

in quiet voice going to court next friday and couldn't lie for anyone am afraid

wobblyknicks Thu 10-Mar-05 22:57:33

Bit of a paradox for me - I'd be prepared to lie in court for any of my real friends, but I think if they asked me to they'd prove they weren't real friends in the first place.

jampots Thu 10-Mar-05 22:58:33

agree with lav - wouldnt lie in court for anyone and wouldnt expect anyone to do it for me (if the need ever arose)

wobblyknicks Thu 10-Mar-05 22:58:35

And would lie in court for my kids depending on circumstances.

WK - yes I see what you mean it would have to be volunteered wouldn't it!

Don't think I could for anyone.....even if my kids had done something bad enough to get to court I don't think I could lie.

ThomCat Thu 10-Mar-05 22:59:53

Blimey. well without knowing waht they had done .... I can't imagine not laying down my life for, and I guess that must incluse lying in a court of law, for 2 of my best, best girlfriends, my immediate family and DP and DD. Then again i can't really say that, not if they had murdered. Can't really answer this one, I'd like tio think I'd do anything to protect my loved ones, but lying in court to save theitr skin, no matter what their crime, well no, I'm not sure I could. I hope I'm never put to ther test.

soapbox Thu 10-Mar-05 22:59:58

Hmmm! Does it depend on what you're in court for??

fairyfly Thu 10-Mar-05 22:59:59

nobody, absolutely nobody, if one of my mates had lied for me friendship would be over, its about telling the absolute truth

unicorn Thu 10-Mar-05 23:01:11

Yes surely it depends on what they have done.

To cover up a murder/rape/robbery- would you lie for your pals?

I can't say that I would - and I don't think that has a dot to do with friendship - just morality.

littlemissbossy Thu 10-Mar-05 23:01:22

probably only my children
but for no one else

soapbox Thu 10-Mar-05 23:02:29

What about - non-payment of debts??? Or custody of children???? Or shoplifting????

sievehead Thu 10-Mar-05 23:02:55

Of course you never know do you? I'd like to think I would never do that.

lavenderrr Thu 10-Mar-05 23:04:33

my ex-boss and I will be sitting alondside one another and saying allsorts...lying would be picked up by someone of a physic nature surely

fairyfly Thu 10-Mar-05 23:06:42

i went to court last year and my friend asked me what i wanted her to say, i cannot stand stuff like that. You tell the truth about everything, it gets you in deep shit with your head if you don't. you need to be able to stand up tall and look yourself in the mirror about anything.

jampots Thu 10-Mar-05 23:08:03

completely agree FF

unicorn Thu 10-Mar-05 23:08:03

ahhh well soapy therin lies a whole new field..

I have absolutely no idea in reality.. but virtually, I know that I would like to help any pal in trouble, but somehow I don't think that lying will really do that.

soapbox Thu 10-Mar-05 23:09:45

I have to say that he seemed remarkably unfazed when most of us questioned whether we would feel able to return the favour

princesspeahead Thu 10-Mar-05 23:17:38

my dh says that a true friend is someone who you could phone to get you from the police station at 3 in the morning.
but I don't think I could lie in court for anyone I'm afraid.

soapbox Thu 10-Mar-05 23:49:08

PPH - you're a lawyer - no-one would expect you to lie in court

Unlike my chartered accountant friend. Honestly didn't know whether to feel flattered or shocked by his comment

bossykate Thu 10-Mar-05 23:54:39

hope you are not impugning the veracity of chartered accountants en masse! wouldn't lie in court except to protect dh and the kids and even then it might depend on what they'd done.

soapbox Thu 10-Mar-05 23:58:23

BK - somewhat sadly we were all chartered accoutants. All of us married more of them

So one out of eight not quite a blanket view, but interesting nontheless
