What about make a card or decorate a biscuit? Nice and easy.

Its not bad if you sit on a chair and they sit almost beside you but with their chair facing the other way. You could have a limited number of "faces" for them to pick from so you don't get something really hard to do.

It's at the end of March '09 ... that's end of summer here and could still be hot but hopefully won't be the unforgiving 40 degrees that it can be in December/January/Feb.
I could do facepainting I suppose but I judging by every other kind of fete/fair I have ever been to there is no let up with 7 million 2/3 year olds lining up all day

throwing something (wellies, thongs, knickers (maybe not knickers), whatever...) is easy

you just mark out an area, they pays their money and you put a marker in the furthest one (grouped by age eg. toddlers, toddler-10 yrs, teens, grownups or suchlike)

cue much hilarity and seriously competitive dads getting in on the action

A really easy, and hugely popular one is a transfer stall. You just order boxes of those temporary transfers, have a few sponges and then charge for them.

The time of year of Fair is Australian Autumn (Melbourne, so can be Autumnal, although it is still warm in March ... usually can be highs of around 25/28 degrees ... not hot though)

Our school does a bottle tombola but the bottle are all sourced from the parents !

Kids dress in their own clothes instead of uniform for the day and have to bring in a bottle of anything, shampoo to champagne !!

hello you bunch of fuckers.

at my sons school fair, we had loads of good cheap stuff.

one great one was buy in loads of cheap white mugs (do you have ikea in oz?) and let the children design things on them using ceramic pens....the child takes them home and bakes them in the oven to set the design.... was really popular!

they did t shirt painting...same concept...cheap white t shirts and fabric pens....

agree, the tattoo stall would be great and very popular....

our school hands out a paper sweet bag (like the pick and mix bags...not too big, but not tiny) to every child about a week before the fair....you have to fill it with bits of shit you find hanging around goodies like sweets, pencil, small toy, tiny book, rubber, etc, and they sell them for £1 each on a stall. they go down a treat! really popular, and cost the school no more than the price of the bags.

I have done a stall where you collext loads of cuddly toys, give them all a name label and then charge child an amount to pull a name out of a hat. They get the correspondingly named toy.

This involves relatively little effort (although I did machine wash all the donated toys) and is hugely popular.

Yes, actually, I like the bottle tombola thing ... when I was teaching one of the teachers used to run one of these ... every child brought in a bottle (from shampoo to champagne), she stuck raffle tickets on them and then everyone paid 20p to pick a ticket out of the a hat - they then got the corresponding bottle ...

What about the treasure map? (confession time: read about this in Horrid Henry )

Draw a treasure map on squared paper, squares numbered 1 -100. Everyone pays to initial a square and at the end the one who has initialed the winning square (pull the number out of a hat) wins the prize.

Similar ideas: guess no. of sweets in a jar; guess teddy bear's name.

Works as ghosty says - raffle tickest ending in a 0 or a 5 win. Others don't, but everyone buys ten tickets anyway!
