If I buy something from the US, how much import tax will I have to pay?

I'm looking at getting some toys from the Disney site in the US.
Obviously its alot cheaper but if I get stung for import tax, it may not work out as cheap.

Has anyone got an idea, roughly how much I would pay?
Does it depend on how much you spend in total or is it how much the items are worth?

TIA

It depends exactly what it is because there are different classifications for toys.

The Customs rate is 0-4.75% and VAT is 17.5%

You'd have to pay shipping on the goods from the US, and taht is also taxed.

The exchange rate is very wobbly at the moment.

So, you could probably use a figure of 20% to the British government, even if you don't know the individual tax rates.

Duty is calculated at a percentage rate (depending on classification of the goods) of the value of the goods, plus shipping, plus VAT.

Well the shipping costs are $34 so roughly £17.
So would that mean I would pay 0-4.75% on the total cost which is $50 or just the amount that I am buying which is only $15?

The exchange rate is $1.50 now, not $2.

If it is $50 shipped, the duty and VAT would be about £10.

$50 = £33, so total cost would be £43

Hmmm.

Not sure its worth it then, especially if the dollar isnt as good anymore.

I shall think.
Thank you very much for scrambling it for me

What is it that you want to buy?

Theres a nightie, a lunch bag and a little disney princess remote control toy.
Nothing hugely expensive or big.

I just remembered the site and thought I would look for some bargains. The bits I chose, you can't get over here.

You may not have to pay VAT on the children's clothes, but that would mean having the shipper pack it separately.

Oh naff it. I won't bother.
Its not like these are much wanted things.

Thank you

It's not only the customs/VAT - most shippers will also charge you a handling fee for clearing it through customs for you - another ~£10 - so what with exchange rate and all it's almost certainly not worth it.

Sadly I don't know anyone in the US.
Wish I did!
