When threads get out of hand and ruin your day

I have been posting on the breast feeding thread and became involved in what felt at the time like a big argument with another poster. I'm not going to name them because this isn't the point of this thread. Anyway, yesterday I was upset about it, it was on my mind, I felt it was personal, and it felt massive. I went to an appointment at the consultants in the afternoon with my 3 year old son and was given some pretty devastating news about his eyesight. To cut a long story short my son is blind in one eye and is going to need major surgery. Obviously news like this puts everything into perspective for you, and the reason I am posting this is to say to everyone, Mumsnet is here to encourage, support and help each other. Life can sometimes be really crap and we don't need to come on here and make it worse for each other. I feel really silly that I have spent so much time on here, and even sillier for getting into a stupid meaningless spat with someone I will never meet and whose life I know nothing about. Before you post something to someone who you don't know, try and not make it personal. You don't know what sort of day they are going to have, you don't know what sort of day they have had. Its easy to be a bitch on here because its anonymous. This is my last post for a while. I'm not flouncing or anything silly like that, I just have a bit more on my mind at the moment and want some clear head space. To eveyone who I've chatted to over the last few months, I've really enjoyed your company and I will be back at some time when I have sorted things out. In the meantime, be good to each other!

Leglebegle - I've never chatted to you but was so sorry to hear about your son. Hope the operation goes well for him. I agree with you that things like that just put the silly things that get said on here sometimes just pale into insignificance. Best of luck and hope to see you back soon.

Leglebegle what horrible news. I hope things work out as well as possible for him. Our thoughts are with you.

Poshpaws Wed 02-Mar-05 14:39:40

I saw the thread, lb, and for what it's worth, I agree with you. Hence why I avoid getting into spats with people on here. life is too short for me to be truly arguing with people I don't know.

Sorry to hear about your son and I hope that things will improve for him and you. I am going through a bit of a tough time at the mo, which I don't want to go into on here, but really know where you're coming from.

Take care

PP

So sorry to hear about your son leglebegle, I hope the op is a success and that you will feel like coming back here sometime. Best wishes

Marina Wed 02-Mar-05 14:44:11

Leglebegle, threads on here have reduced me to tears occasionally too. So very sorry to hear the worrying news about your son's eyesight, I really hope the surgery is successful. All of us who have chatted with you here and many others will be thinking of you, please do come back and update us as soon as you feel able. Take care of yourself.

mummylonglegs Wed 02-Mar-05 14:56:26

I read that thread and avoided it like the plague leglebegle. You're right of course, none of it is important when there are real life issues like your son's blindness to contend with.

leglebegle Wed 02-Mar-05 15:27:16

sorry just bumping this so people can see it, won't bump it again!

snafu Wed 02-Mar-05 15:35:11

Hi leglebegle. I stupidly clicked on 'that' thread last night and ended up really wishing I hadn't bothered. I just don't know why it had to get so silly and OTT. FWIW, I am in full agreement with you that the rows and spats on here are just so petty when held up to real life. Even when serious things are being discussed, MN should be an escape from the difficulties thrown up by our own lives, not a place we go and end up feeling worse.

I want to say how sorry I am to hear about your ds and I really hope things turn out well for him. Good luck, best wishes and hope to see you back someday x

Leglebegle, I am so sorry about your son - I hope the surgery can help him.

I'm mad at myself for getting sucked in last night (after staying out of it) and losing my temper for the first time ever on MN. She deserved it though

Take care, and hope to see you back before too long.

leglebegle Wed 02-Mar-05 15:47:14

thanks marthamoo and to all for kind comments. I actually feel postive about the news if that doesn't sound too mad. I knew there was something wrong, he's had surgery before when he was very little, but we were told it had improved. I felt instinctively it hadn't, and now have found out the eyesight has completely regressed in his left eye. We have to patch him which will be terrible because his brain has completely switched off from the eye and he will be blind until it starts to work, then he will have surgery, probably in 6-12 weeks. The consultant is optimistic we can save his eye, and I feel we are doing something. It just puts everything into perspective and made me feel silly for getting sucked in. Nothing like a dose of real life to come and smack sense into you though!

alaughingcow Wed 02-Mar-05 15:49:01

HI Leglebegle, haven't spoken before but sorry to hear you got upset on here. I hope to chat to you more when you come back. Good luck for the surgery, hope this time it's an improvement.

miam Wed 02-Mar-05 15:51:58

Poor little thing. I really hope the surgery will be successful and his eyesight will be saved. It is great that you and the specialist are so positive - that alone will help him. And thanks for putting things back into perspective - it was definately needed! All the best. xx

leglebegle Wed 02-Mar-05 16:08:48

MancMum Wed 02-Mar-05 16:35:52

leglebegle -- really sorry to hear about your son and also your decision to leave for a while... I am not a frequent poster but I am sad that you are leaving and totally understand why you need the head space...I think mumsnet can be the most fantastic source of support and find it really dpressing when it turns so nasty... I wish your son well for his future operations and that you return soon

Cam Wed 02-Mar-05 16:38:46

leglebegle, I always find your posts worth reading. Sorry about your ds news - hope to see you here again v. soon.
