Who has one? How often do you have to get them 're-done?'. Are you happy with it? Does your dp have one - how does he get on with it?

Thinking about buying one for dh...

My engagement ring is white gold. To be honest it does discolour pretty quickly to a pale yellow. I had the rhodium coating (don't have a clue how it's spelt) redone the other day so it's back to a silvery colour. As my wedding band is platinum I've started waering the engagement ring on my right hand as the colours have become different (also my wonderful DH bought be a platinum/sapphire ring for 1st wedding anniversary...bless him...so wear that with the wedding band). Platinum goes dull so have to get them buffed up every so often but if had the choice (and hard cash) would tend to go for platinum above white gold.

Go for Platinum if you can afford it.

My engagement ring, wedding ring and eternity ring are all platinum and Dh always says he's glad we got that instead of white gold.

I have a white and yellow gold ring that I was given for my 18th birthday and after 2 months you could'nt tell the difference in the colours.

Both my engagement/wedding rings are white gold as is dh wedding ring and they have lasted fine so far, although dh wants to 'upgrade' to platinum.

My engagement ring is white gold and I've probably had it recoated only 3 times in about 8 years. It doesn't go yellow very often and still llooks the same as my platimum maternity ring which I wear on my other hand. My wedding band is whit cold edging round a yellow gold centre and has never had the rhodium coating redone - it is the same colour as both my engagement ring and maternity ring.

I guess it depends on the ring and what you do with your hands. I would imagine it might wear quite quickly as a man's ring.

I didn't realise white gold was coated until I had my engagement ring resized and they forgot to re coat it with the rhodium. I spent ages looking at it in all lights thinking "does it look pale gold...."

I work in a jewellers and I would definitely reccomend getting platinum if you can. I have white gold and I really regret getting it now. When we have a bit more money I'm going to 'upgrade' to platinum and have the stones reset. How yellow it goes does depend on what the other metals are - the best white gold is yellow gold mixed only with platinum. Other metals that can be used are silver and copper. My wedding band is from a different shop to my eternity ring (didn't get an engagement ring - only knew each other for two months when we got married!) and even when the rhodium plating has worn off it doesn't look much different but my eternity band definitely yellows.

Why don't you look at getting your engagement ring reset Nik72?

ripley,

how does titanium compare? i noticed the shop had some mens rings made out of it too.

I hate titanium. It scratches easily and feels too lightweight and is actually quite cheap to buy. One of the girls in the shop said that she saw customers coming back all the time because the quality just didn't last.

I know exactly what you mean. I find I'm doing really sad things like looking at QVC (did you know it's gem showcase week?!) and for a real laugh gems.tv and window shopping in every single jewllery shop I come across. The discounts I get are tooo tempting also!

Report
Newbarnsleygirl · 17/02/2005 18:02

I love watching the gems on QVC. Have to admit I have bought a few as well. I keep checking gems tv but there's alot of crap designs on there don't you think?

My DH has a panic attack everytime we go near a jewellery shop!

My engament ring is being repaired at the moment because dh dropped something on it and it's got a chip on the band. I miss it sooooo much! (how sad)

Gems.tv has the most horrific designs! There was one night when they had these huge rubys (about an inch in diameter) and they were all hand carved crudely with busts of nondescript women on them. And they were selling!! Some of the colour combinations they have are soooo gaudy looking as well. I would love to have a tanzanite ring though.
