How long do CRB checks last?

I had an enhanced one done in June, and now my work is asking me to do another one.

The one in June was for entry to a nursing course, but its for the same area as where I work. I will also be having ANOTHER enchanced CRB check for entry to the nursing course soon.

If I have the one for work, I have to pay for it, and I have to go to this random place miles away to have my documents checked. I am also leaving this job in July, so it would only be for about 3 months by the time I got it through.

My manager said that anyone who started after July had to have a new one because the care standards agency said so, but I don't understand why I need another one within a year??

Hi Smurfgirl - I deal with personnel in a school so have some exp of CRB checks.

I think the difficulty is that there are no hard & fast rules, each organisation really has to set its own criteria.

We follow Surrey LEA advice, which is that an enhanced CRB is valid until there is a break in employment or other significant change (eg change of address.

Can you speak to someone in HR? There's often a lot of confusion over CRB checks & your boss may just have got it wrong?

I had one done in November 2002 when I was working in a nursery. I left there and went straight into doing "volunteer" work (several days a week) in a primary school and they were quite happy with the November one (took a photocopy for their files).

Should say I'm still at the school, so it's been 2 1/4 years since my last check.

I'm not in work again for a week (YES!) but I'll pester my manager again. No way is it realistic to have 3 CRB checks in a year! I don't have a bloody criminal record anyway!

It's quite obvious they're not very consistent!

It might depend on what categories your last CRB check covered. The organisation applying for the CRB has to specify what checks are made. You may have an enhanced CRB disclosure but perhaps it wasn't checked against the DfES list or the Dept of Health list. It's a bit daft that there isn't just one all-encompassing check rather than all these 'pick n mix' checks. It would save all the extra hassle and expense.

CRB checks are only as up to date as the date they were done. An employer is liable to ensure that you are not on the sex offenders register so to be on the safe side will probbaly insist you do a new one. I was CRB checked twice within a month for 2 separate organisations. It is really up to the employer or organisation what stance they take. MAny will play it safe.

Dh CRB checks teachers and he has to be able to prove that he has checked the identity properly by keeping photocopies of documents.

Only certain people in a compnay called countersignatories are able to check documents so that is why you have to go to this place.

Mine covers Police records, DofE, DofH and others.

crb checks say now that they are only valid on the day that you get them...if you see what i mean. ]

int heory you would have to get one every day.

i would certainly get staff or volunteers done at least once a year
