toast, corflakes
Banana and orange
Chilli con carnie and rice
Orange jelly
Cheap nasty american style hot dogs
and yogurt

at nursery yesterday and they wondered why she was sick. What a load of cr@p food. I think the chilli only consisted of garlic from the smell of her. I think I'd be sick too if I had all of that swishing round in my tummy!!!

Um ewww

If I ate that load of crap I'd feel ill too.

Can't you request a more balanced diet?

Sounds like the sort of things my DS's and I would eat in an 'average' day.......fruit, starch, yoghurts, meat, sweet stuff

lunavix · 09/02/2005 11:51

a nice homemade chili is great....

but cheap hotdogs AS WELL?

most kids are meant to have one hot meal aren't they?
It sounds an awful lot IMO, and I don't think it hurts to specify food, they are looking after your child and you are paying them a fair bit for the privilege!

dont have a problem with the toast, cornflakes, fruit or yoghurt.

chilli could've been nice if done properly, not keen on jelly for kids, or cheap hotdogs.

yogurtshould've been ok.

but thats a lot of food. is she there all day? for all 3 meals?

She's absolutly fine. Once it was all out of her system. Ds was fine and he'd eaten the same as dd. In fact ds came home saying he was hungry so he had a jam sandwich, a banana and an orange. I pressume he's just going through a growth spurt.

Actually don't think it is too bad. Would prefer not cornflakes (DS used to have weetabix at this age at nursery) and not hot dog sausages but would not be surprised about that menu from our nursery. I always give my children extra fruit in the evenings. I don't think it is a lot of food - three meals plus a fruit snack.

Lunavix would you really feel ill? Don't feel that two hot meals if one is a snack type (eg beans on toast) is excessive.

It's the combination of it all that makes me feel sick. There is no way on earth they can say all of that covers a 2 year olds dietry requirement for a day

Have to say I agree with bozza. Again not sure about the hot-dog sausages but at dd's nursery they tend to have

Breakfast (similar to the one you described)
Fruit snack mid-morning
Main hot meal at lunch-time + desert
then tea which is usual more snack-like (beans/sandwich/potato wedges type stuff)
+desert(although not actually sure if they have desert after tea or not)

so it doesn't really sound excessive to me - and to be honest I don't think jelly is too bad if for example it's on a 6-week meal rosta once. Also it's worth remembering the portions are quite small.

Perhaps I am just a bad mummy!

My DS's love hot dog sausages - make a great 'snack' lunch for them (they have cooked at dinner time).

When I make Chilli Con carne - I put veg in it too - so they get another of their portions of fruit and veg from that.

It's not the amount that she had. I'm quite happy with her eating that much it's the combination of what she had. I doubt it would have been a whole banana or a whole orange so that means she's barely covered 1 portion.

Apart from the hot dogs I think it's not so bad - as long as it wasn't all in one sitting!

Why are they feeding cheap hot-dogs though? I'd ask more about that. Are you sure it wasn't decent sausages?

How would you feel if your child was fed....SPAM... then?
Yes, the mother in law.....mmmmmmmmmm

Report
Gwenick · 09/02/2005 12:10

woodpops - at 2yrs old my DS wouldn't eat the same '5 portions' of fruit and veg as us - a whole banane VERY rarely. But then children tend not to eat the same 'quantities' of food as us anyhow, so while a whole banana for us=1 portion, for a child 1/2 a banana would suffice.. IMO that is

woodpops · 09/02/2005 12:13

DD won't ever eat jelly or yogurt at home. She's much happier to demolish the fruit bowl or have a small box of raisons. I'm only presuming she eats it at nursery because all the other kids do.

DS and DD both have chilli at home and like you Gwenick I make sure that mine has plenty of veg (eg onions, peppers etc) in it. Might not be that authentic but.... But not sure that would be the case at either Woodpops or my nursery.

I do agree with you Woodpops about it not being too balanced. Just wasn't sure you could blame it for making her sick. I always check what my DS/DD have eaten at nursery and substitute at home for any food groups that I feel have been lacking. Generally its fruit and/or veg.

How much of the nursery fees go on food?

I mean is there any options as to what they get fed?

ie can you choose veg option or halal or kosher {which obviously would be bought in specially in sealed containers like in hospital} or organic if you pay more?

Always fruit and veg, I'm just lucky both of mine prefer fruit to sweets and chocolate. Me on the other hand would go for the chocolate

Good point, RTKM

At DS nursery, there is a veggie option.

Agree with others that he has about the same number of meals in a day.

WP, was your daughter doing a lot of running around or high physical activity soon after having eaten? That may have made her feel sick. The only reason why I ask this is because I assume she has similar diet there every day she is there?

Report
KateandtheGirls · 09/02/2005 12:18

It doesn't sound too terrible to me to be honest. Obviously it could be better, but everything besides the hot dog and jelly is pretty healthy. It's certainly not enough to make anyone physically sick I wouldn't have thought. Your son was fine so it doesn't sound like the food was contaminated. I guess your daughter had just caught something. Glad she's better now.
