looking like newton abbot is the nearest place changing at Exeter

jimjamshaslefttheyurt Tue 22-Jul-08 20:42:10

Yes Newton Abbot.

Although is a straightforward drive from Exeter or Plymouth - and faster road.

WideWebWitch Tue 22-Jul-08 20:42:37

Or Totnes?

artichokes Tue 22-Jul-08 20:42:57

Trains from Newton Abbot go straight to Paddington. Takes about 3 hours and they leave very regularly. No need to change at Exeter. Newton Abbot is about 25 mins from River Dart Country Park. Other nearby station is Totnes which also has direct trains. Both stations are probably equidistant from RDCP.

how far is it from Ashburton to newton abbot? It looks very near

Ellbell Tue 22-Jul-08 20:43:42

I was going to suggest Newton Abbot, Beetroot. Do some of the Penzance to Paddington trains stop there? (They used to back in the olden days when I used to go up and down that line, but that was ... ahem ... some time ago.)

We are camping at River Dart in August, which is why I opened this thread. Have you been before?

Beetroot Tue 22-Jul-08 20:43:45

oh fab - would be better if the girls did not have to change.

jimjamshaslefttheyurt Tue 22-Jul-08 20:43:48

oh Totnes must be closer I would think.

artichokes Tue 22-Jul-08 20:43:58

Ashburton about 20 mins drive from Newton Abbot.

WideWebWitch Tue 22-Jul-08 20:44:00

don't forget it's all cuntry miles, can take ages!

Beetroot Tue 22-Jul-08 20:44:42

yes we go most years. jsut for a long weekend.

we are there from 2nd - 5th august this year with a few friends

jimjamshaslefttheyurt Tue 22-Jul-08 20:44:44

Newton Abbot traffic dreadful. Totnes probably faster.

artichokes Tue 22-Jul-08 20:45:06

Seriously don't wory about changing. I think all the Penzance or Plymouth to Paddington trains stop at NA and Totnes. So there are direct trains every couple of hours.

Beetroot Tue 22-Jul-08 20:45:54

will check both,

two girls (15 and 13) coming to meet us - am sure they will be fine doing this trip but would prefer them to not have to change

artichokes Tue 22-Jul-08 20:46:44

Ashburton to Totnes is also a 20 minute drive and there is very rarely bad traffic on that road (as long as take the one that passes through Buckfastleigh and then Dartington rather than the A38).

Beetroot Tue 22-Jul-08 20:46:54

okay will look aty totnes

They could meet us in Penzance a few days earlier I guess - as we will be at Sennan Cove

Ellbell Tue 22-Jul-08 20:47:56

Hold on...if you are head up from Newquay, wouldn't Plymouth be easier? The people coming down from London will go a bit further west than they really need, but if you take the A38 out of C'wall rather than the A30 it's pretty much on the way.... And all the Paddington to Pz trains stop at Plymouth.

We are there from 11th August. Really looking forward to it... especially the dds!

Ellbell Tue 22-Jul-08 20:49:26

Just re-read that. My knowledge of methods of leaving Cornwall is quite impressive. (Story of my life!)

Beetroot Tue 22-Jul-08 20:50:04

it is fab - we stay in the walled garden which is a bit further away from amenities but quieter and I think nicer.

take swim shoes.

will think about plymouth too

artichokes Tue 22-Jul-08 20:50:15

Nooo don't go into Plymouth. Bad traffic and a bit of a trek to station from your route. Plenty (if not all) the Paddington to Penzance trains stop at Totnes. AVOID Plymouth.

Why avoid Plymouth? Over the bridge, take the Crownhill exit, third exit on roundabout, go past central park, turn left, down hill, over roundabout, up hill, first exit, down hill, follow road, station. Easy peasy. Reverse route going back and rejoin A38 and off you go to Ashburton and Dartmoor.

The traffic in Plymouth is not looking forward to going back (home) in 10 days.

They are coming int Newton Abott - much easier adn we don't have to hang around for them.
Great advice

thank you
