You reluctantly concede you are indeed a living breathing liberalpinko cliche when...

You're capable of dithering for a full five minutes between the Organic and the Fair Traded bananas

You vividly remember the first time you took a deep, transgressive breath and bought South African produce

You used to think sex shops were the most oppressive places out, and now you think they're a necessary element of self expression

If and when you find out you're not on any secret lists (insert files, phone-taps, etc, as appropriate) you'll be terribly miffed

Your children's stockings have fair-traded chocolate coins in them

And, for our more mature members...
A secret part of you feels nostalgia for the 80s, because You Knew Where You Were with Thatcher

If someone shouts 'Maggie Maggie Maggie' at you, you'll respond automatically.

I could go on

spacedonkey Tue 21-Dec-04 13:33:34

pmsl

Absolutely agree about the nostalgia thing. Thatch was such a great hate figure wasn't she

TheHollyAndTheTwiglett Tue 21-Dec-04 13:38:10

out, out, out

I had a sneaky idea this was an MI thread

walkinginawelshmumwonderland Tue 21-Dec-04 13:42:43

Your child understands the word recycling at the age of 2.

Same child will also pick out the correct newspaper in the shop without being told.

Child also gets excited when asked to help mummy with a petition.

Her first big outing at nine weeks was to a Drop the Debt march - her buggy being decorated with a 'Juniors for Justice' banner (did I really do that?!)

feastofstevenmom Tue 21-Dec-04 13:44:00

thatcher, thatcher, milksnatcher

ahhhh i am getting all nostalgic now.

TheHollyAndTheTwiglett Tue 21-Dec-04 13:45:41

Your 3 year old believes that all doctors are women and corrects you when you say 'no darling men can be doctors too' .. 'don't be silly mummy, men are nurses'

my 3 year old is a boy btw

methinks feminist theory may be pushed to the limit in the house of twig

MariNativityPlay Tue 21-Dec-04 13:47:33

Your child boos Michael Howard whenever he sees him on TV or on a poster (that's my boy)
PMSL too MI especially at the faffing about over bananas bit.

spacedonkey Tue 21-Dec-04 13:48:24

huzzah for Marina's junior member of staff booing That Howard Creature!

JanH Tue 21-Dec-04 13:48:31

I'm too old for all the 80s bits.....and was not at all political in the 70s

But I get Fairtrade choc for stockings and do the banana dither so do I sort of qualify a bit?

MariNativityPlay Tue 21-Dec-04 13:51:09

I can remember a hissed intake of breath when I first met dh and saw he banked at Barclays, in fact we had our first disagreement about it ;)

serenequeen Tue 21-Dec-04 13:53:29

teehee re the bananas! i have agonised over that one - plumped for the fair trade in the end. likewise, we used to grind beans for coffee but now get ft ready ground (can't get ft beans...)

bundleofyulelogs Tue 21-Dec-04 13:53:29

dd1 shouts "tony bleugh bleugh bleugh" at the tv...thought it was only us

spacedonkey Tue 21-Dec-04 13:54:05

PMSL marina! I was watching the south bank show last night and when I noticed that it is sponsored by barclays I felt a sense of disappointment, annoyance and sadness but couldn't quite locate why - thanks for reminding me!

MariNativityPlay Tue 21-Dec-04 14:02:16

ROFL, precisely spacedonkey. Smashing programme, loads to be cheered about...then the sponsor tag!
Still feel iffy about Chilean wine FGS
Bundle, I got into a lot of trouble with dh over the Family Hate of Michael Howard. Prissily informed me we should allow ds to make up his own mind about public figures. I think he is turning into a Grumpy Old Man, but not the amusing sort. Anyone got the number of a good divorce lawyer...

spacedonkey Tue 21-Dec-04 14:03:45

mmm, I had a slight altercation with dp over Michael Howard

Just because he's jewish it doesn't make him any more acceptable!

Issymum Tue 21-Dec-04 14:07:42

You tell your friends that you're sending your daughter to a school in Park Barn (one of Guildford's few council estates) and fail to mention that it's a precious little prep school in a 19th century house clinging incongruously to the edge of Park Barn ....

bundleofyulelogs Tue 21-Dec-04 14:17:17

marina, dd1 does impressions of him: "the peep-pel"

spacedonkey Tue 21-Dec-04 14:20:03

hester Tue 21-Dec-04 14:26:39

You know how to complete the following:

'Dig deep....'

'You can't kill the spirit; she is like a mountain...'

'Sing if you're....'

'Coal not....'

'No Fun, No....'

You know what No Platform means (other than a warning not to get out at the end of the train).

You secretly flick through discarded copies of The Mail on the tube and hope nobody you know sees you.

And this is a true one, heard from a friend last night: you do such a good job of introducing your children to other faiths that they get confused and start insisting, tearfully but wrongly, that they ARE Jewish, they are!

Piffleoffagus Tue 21-Dec-04 14:47:07

my 10 yr son old hates the thatch too, thinks Howard is a non entity and reads Private Eye avidly..
I am all of the things mentioned
I even ditched my bank when they could not confirm whether my savings could be only invested in ethical companies...
hee hee

pantomimEDAMe Tue 21-Dec-04 14:50:10

more mature?! Excuse me, MI, I know for a fact I'm five years younger than you and I still remember 'Maggie Maggie Maggie'!

seriously, am already rehearsing my lines for the first time a copper demands to see the ID card I will not be carrying (can you be a conscientious objector to ID cards?). Does that count?

WideWebWitch Tue 21-Dec-04 14:53:10

MI, the answer to Maggie, Maggie, Maggie is Out, Out, Out. Mumsnet is making me larf a lot today, I have dithered about organic vs fairtrade too! But managed to get both in coffee, what a relief! Ha ha hester at the Jewish children! Great thread!

Issymum Tue 21-Dec-04 15:03:33

You get misty-eyed at the mention of 'Llandudno', the 1980's home of the Labour Party Young Socialists Conference.

You announce, at every appropriate and inappropriate opportunity, 'my maternal grandmother was a lesbian...'

DannieTheMisanthropicReindeer Tue 21-Dec-04 15:13:33

You taught your DS to sing "The mummies on the bus read the Financial Times"

hester Tue 21-Dec-04 15:14:06

Hey Issymum, mine too!
