Recommendations for theatre trip

Hi everyone - we're planning a day out in London (sans kids!) and thought we'd like to go to a theatre matinee performance then the comedy store in the evening. I haven't been to the theatre in years and am pretty out of touch with what's on at the moment. My only thought is to go and see Art, which I've heard favourable things about. Has anyone got any recommendations? Dp hates musicals, so non musicals please! Thanks

What you mean he isn't a secret Darren Day fan?

I'd recommend the Morecambe & Wise tribute - The Play Wot I wrote - which I think is coming back on again soonish. It was very funny (if you like M&W)

I saw 'Art earlier this year - it was very good. Also saw 'The Woman in Black' which was enjoyable (quite spooky if you like a good ghost story). Heard that 'Stones in his Pockets' is excellent - plan to see that one if I can ever get a night out!!!!I would also like to see 'Fame' and 'The Full Monty' but dh is very anti-musicals too!!

I saw Art ages ago when Jack Dee was in it and it was good. I've also seen Woman in Black which was very enjoyable - and not too spooky!

Haven't been for ages though.

spacemonkey - I've recently seen Vincent in Brixton and Stones in His Pockets, both of which I'd recommend (especially the latter), and I can tell you a bit more about them if you like. Years ago I saw Woman in Black and An Inspector Calls, don't know if they're both still on but but both very good too. What sort of theatre do you and your dp like?

Woman in Black is still on, I think An Inspector Calls is finished. Given half a chance I'd love to see Vincent in Brixton or the new Caryl Churchill, Number. Or there is the fantastic Brian Friel two-hander, Afterplay, with Penelope Wilton and John Hurt - if you like Chekhov. Apart from Art & Stones in His Pockets, I think most of the rest of the West End shows are either musicals or quite gloomy/challenging stuff at the minute.

Mousetrap? Is it still on? I enjoyed that but didn't enjoy Woman In Black.

Art was fantastic so try to see it if you can. How about just going to the 'half price ticket' stands in Leicester Square to see what is available. It makes it a nice surprise. A friend and I were lucky enough to see Marty Pellow (yum) in Chicago a month or so ago. (Yeah, I know it is a musical but they sell tickets for all the performances...) Whatever you end up seeing, I hope you have a fabulous time.

Oo thanks everyone for your tips - Art is going to star the cast of League of Gentlemen soon which could be interesting! I went to see Chicago with Ruthie Henshall and Nigel Planer a few years ago and i LOVED it (but then i do like musicals). I will check out that website Marina and have a look at what's on. I think dp would prefer a comedy really, but i like all genres.

Another big yes to Art. I am also a very big Les Mis fan. Broke my heart to that many a time!
