If you fall off and break your leg, don't come running to me.

If the wind changes, your face will stick like that.

Ne'er cast a clout till May be out

Twiglett Sun 16-Sep-07 09:37:43

actually edam ol' cheese, I have never been known to cast a clout before June so patently that one still rings true

WideWebWitch Sun 16-Sep-07 09:37:50

The older I get the more often I hear thsi kind of thing coming out of my mouth

"Don't be a busy fool"
"if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all"
"all's well that ends well"
"discretion is the better part of valour" (I've actually SAID this at work a bit recently! blush)

Twiglett Sun 16-Sep-07 09:39:27

"if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all"

WideWebWitch Sun 16-Sep-07 09:45:36

edam Sun 16-Sep-07 15:46:38

Doesn't clout = vest, though, from the days when people used to cover themselves in goosegrease under a vest, to keep the cold out?

Slubberdegullion Sun 16-Sep-07 15:51:21

Never judge a person until you've walked a mile in their shoes.

Neither a borrower nor a lender be.

That might be difficult if you need a mortgage though hmm

TheApprentice Sun 16-Sep-07 16:02:06

Aah, this reminds me of a poster I had when i was little that i used to LOVE - it was a huge "busy" picture with lots of different proverbs illustrated on it. I used to look at it every night before I went to sleep....

mytwopenceworth Sun 16-Sep-07 16:04:19

Maybe not all good to live by, but all good to remember!...

Good fences make good neighbours
Beauty is only skin deep
Beggers can't be choosers
A closed mouth catches no flies
A friend is easier lost than found
Hatred is as blind as love
He who wronged you will hate you
Grumbing makes the loaf no larger
Only a fool speaks all his mind
Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it
