Skipping Rhymes

The Eeny meeny miney mo thread made me think about skipping in the playground. I know we had a few rhymes but I don't remember any of them - one had something to do with 24 robbers knocking at the door.

What skipping rhymes do you remember?

We had one which I'm struggling to remember

On a mountain stands a castle
Whose the owner? Frankenstien
And his daughter, Pansy Porter
She's his only valentine

There was a second bit which started:

"So why don't you...

But for the life of me I can't remember the rest. Can anyone enlighten me?

Can't think of a skipping one but the balls against the wall one

Queenio, who has the ball is she big or is she small. Is she fat or is she thin or is she like a rolling pin.

Robin Hood and his merry men went to school at half past ten, teacher said your late again, Robin Hood and his merry men.

My mother saw your mother hanginging out her clothes my mother gave your mother a box on the nose. What coloure was the blood? RED.
God no wonder I'm in therapy!

Thanks Califrau, it was driving me bonkers, not remembering the words!

Gooseyloosey - we did yours as a song. I now have the tune stuck in my head!

I forgot about the ball games but I don't remember having rhymes for ours.

I'm popeye the sailor man
I live in a caravan
There's a hole in the middle

I'm popeye the sailor man

She could do the wibble-wobble,

She could lift her dress right up to her hips!'

Singing Up Mississippi, if you miss a loop you're out!

Cowboy Joe
From Mexico
Hands up
Stick em up
Drop your guns and pick em up
And out you go!

I am a girl guide dressed in blue
These are the things that I must do
Salute to the captain
Bow to the Queen
And show my frilly knickers to the football team

Ooh, I've been teaching some to dd1 this week

(This is the skipping where 2 people turn the rope and one skips in the middle)
Blue bells
cockle shells
Evy ivy over
How many boys did you kiss last night
Had a little bumper car number 42
I took it round the coooooooooor-NER! (skipping person jumps out of the rope, runs around the others and jumps back in)

Si si my playmate
I cannot play with you
My sister's had the flu
Since 1962
Quick down the drainpipe
And through the cellar door
And we'll be jolly friends
For ever more
Si Si!

at my first primary school we were fantastic at skipping - we could do "one and out" with the whole class (girls only obv ), but then I moved and the new school (only 5 miles away) didn't do skipping. Instead we had a load of ball games (sevensies? bate?).
Are you allowed to do the big skipping games in schools any more (thinking huge long rope, "health and safety" issues)?

On the hillside stands a lady,
Who she is I do not know.
All she wants is gold and silver,
All she wants is a nice young man.
Lady, lady, touch the ground,
Lady, lady, turn right round,
Lady, lady, show your shoe,
Lady, lady, run right through.

or

Apple jelly, blackcurrant jam,
Tell me the name of your young man,
A, B, C (until person trips)

or

All in together girls,
This fine weather girls,
When you hear your birthday,
Please jump in.
January, February, March, April,
May, June, July, August,
September, October, November, December.

and

Jelly on the plate, jelly on the plate,
Wibble wobble, wibble wobble,
Jelly on the plate,
Sausages in the pan, sausages in the pan,
Turn them over, turn them over,
Sausages in the pan.

I loved skipping!

Ooooh, these are great!

I have just enthusiastically skimmed the thread. My dd is very much into skipping at the moment, and I don't know any English ones, I'll have to teach her some of these!

What tunes do you sing them on, or is there no tune as such, just a basic rhythm?

I know some French ones if you're interested...

Back to read the thread more carefully...

Please keep of the grass
To let the ladies pass
Here comes (persons name who is skipping)
Sliding on her...
Ask no questions
Tell no lies
You better keep your trap shut
And catch no...
Fly away Peter
Fly away Paul
Come back Peter
Come back...
Polly in the kitchen
Doing her stitching
In jumped the spider
And out jumped "me" (said by skipper who then jumps out.)

Ah, we were a saucy lot in Gartconner Primary! That is the cleanest one I can remember.

If anyone else remembers the one that started "This is number one and the stories just begun..."

Like I said, a saucy bunch were we.

Mother's in the kitchen
Doing a bit of stitchin'
In comes a burglar
And out goes she

I prefer Polly and the spider myself.

Funny how rhymes differ in different regions unless you are from my neck of the woods Pesto (near Campsie Fells.)

TwoifbySea - you were a saucy lot! I've only heard the "This is number one" sung as a rugby song (assuming it's the same one)!

The version of 'this is number one and the story's just begun' that I learnt at Guide camp had the stirring chorus 'Roll me over in the clover, roll me over, lay me down and do it again...'

I don't remember many skipping rhymes except Cowboy Joe as above and these two:

All the girls in our town have a happy life
except for [girl skipping] who wants to be a wife
a wife she shall be
a husband she shall have
and that shall be
[random boy's name]
she kisses him, she cuddles him, she sits him on her knee
Oh my darling, won't you marry me?
yes, no, yes, no...
(faster and faster till she trips)

and this one where you had to jump in when your name was called...
Vote vote vote for [Alice]
in comes [Hannah] at the door
[Hannah] is the one that we all adore
so we don't want [Alice] any more (Bang! shut the door!)
Vote vote vote for [Hannah]...

We did Popeye and I'm a Little Bumper Car for elastic skipping, but for some reason were more into clapping games - used 'Si Si my baby' for clapping.

Two more I remembered:

(girls's name) and (boy's name) sitting in a tree
k-i-s-s-i-n-g
How many kisses did he give her
1,2,3 (until skipper trips)

and

We had a dog and we called him Fido
When our Fido was a pup
He would stand upon his front legs (touch ground)
If you held the back ones up (try to catch legs while jumping)

flamingtoaster, if one of the lines was "roll me over..." then it is the same one.

Am loving this thread! The ones we had were crap compared to these delights. DD1 is gonna love me tomorrow! Thankyou all.
