Our landlord has decided to put the house up for sale and we've got to find somewhere by 14th October.
I'm a bit annoyed though because the agent sent me an e-mail 2 days ago asking our intentions for renewal and then today we get a letter with this "delightful" news.

A bit odd about the agent? It is right though that you should be given 2 months notice (notice to quit). Did you get in touch with the agent?
