Driving question

I'm learning to drive. My instructor recently asked me to do the new 'pull up on the right hand side of the road, reverse back two car lengths & then rejoin the traffic' manoeuvre.

I did the manoeuvres twice, once on a really quiet road & then on a more busy road, the busy road, I indicated to pull up over on the right & indicated to pull out again. My instructor tells me I don't need to do that as I'm confusing other car users? Not so much on indicating to pull over but on indicating to come out, he says indicating isn't needed, just wait for a clear gap & pull out - when I ask my husband he says always, always indicate. I will ask my instructor again when I see him to clarify but what do you do or think?

Always indicate, then other drivers are aware of your intention to pull out.

I'm learning too and I get confused. I thiught you always indicate (appropriately) to let other road users/pedestrians know what you're doing but when I indicated to pull over my instructor said it's not needed unless something is behind you?

You definitely need to indicate in this situation.

This sounds like an odd manoeuvre though, what's the purpose of it?

Yes indicate and check mirrors and blind spot before pulling out.

I would say indicate, surely. But I also don’t understand that manoeuvre?... I’ve only been driving 18 months so it must be very new?

I've just had a look and found this YouTube video. Makes sense that you hold off indicating until you actually intend to move off (rather than putting the indicator on while traffic is moving past you, as that might be confusing).

I don't see the point in the manoeuvre though, it's going to confuse a lot of road users coming across learner drivers!

You should always indicate, not just for other drivers but for pedestrians who might be crossing the road etc. The whole purpose of that manoeuvre is to test you on your use of mirrors and indication.
