Trick or treat???

I know this is probably a silly question but... what is supposed to happen when you answer the door to trick or treaters?? Unbelieveably I have never been trick or treating myself or stayed in the house to receive visitors on the night. We have recently moved house to a nice street with lots of young families so we are going to put a bit of effort in, decorate the outside of the house a little, put the baby in a pumpkin costume and have a big bowl of sweets to offer out. What do we say when we open the door to the kids? Do we have to ask the to tell us a joke or something in return for the sweets? I feel stupid asking this question to my friends ☺️

Just open the door and comment on their costumes (something along the lines of ooh don’t you all look good) and then hand out the sweets. That’s all we do and most people the DC see anyway.
