Thinking of applying for a job in saltley, B'ham. does anyone know what its like? And suggest areas within 10miles or so that would be nice to live in. The job is in a school in saltley, don't want to live there or too close by! Thanks

I've never heard of it..which side of Birmingham is it?

I think Satly is quite rough - what is the name of the school and I'll ask my mum. She was a bead in Birmimgham.

I grew up in Harborne which is on the other sige (the south side) - I guess it would take a 20 miutes drive in rushhour. Harborne is nive - lots fo good schools, green, well connected for the centre by bus. Edgbaston is the really posh bit (well most fo it, some of it is red light). Solihull is on the right side of the city for Saltley and is another nice place to live - lots of WAGS.

She was not a bead but a head. She now works in Tipton.

God no don't live in Saltly or Sparkbrook or anywhere round there.

Erm nice areas are, Sutton Coldfield, Four Oaks, Mere Green, Great Barr (well parts of), parts of Mosely are nice too I believe, oh and Solihull.

I would avoid, Erdington, Aston, Newtown, Perry Barr, Kingstanding, Nechells, Castle Vale, Castle Bromwhich, Smiths Wood, Alum rock, and thats all i can think of for now LOL.

Thats what I was trying to remember, Harbourne and Edgebaston, yep they are nice too, well in the nice bits lol.

Mosely is cheaper than Harborne and is nice. Depends on your neighbour. Lots of doctors, dentists etc but also some drug dealers - mind you suppose you get that anywhere.

Moseley, Bournville and Harborne are the nicest imho. All on the South side.

Sutton Coldfield and parts of Erdington are nice (well they were last time I visited). Sutton has very good state schools, good leisure facilities and a 2,400 acre park.

Thanks for that! Cazzybabs the school os parkfield primary if your mum has any info that would be great. From what I can gather the area is very deprived, don't mind working in a rough area just don't want to live there!

Edgbaston is too near city centre, not very homely.
Harborne is nice but way over priced.
Moseley is also overpriced, but more hippyish.
Kings Heath has a rough high street, but nice streets with teacher/social work types living there.
Bournville is underpriced, nice and peaceful but lacking amenities.
Near to Bournville are Selly Park, Kings Norton, Cotteridge and better parts of Northfield all reasonable.

Bournville UNDERpriced? Please tell me you're joking as I would love to be able to afford to live in Bournville!

Sorry, Puffling, didn't mean to shout. (blush)

Parts of Erdington are ok but the high street is dire IMO.

Bournville will have the first tesco express (in the counrty) which is alcohol free! big hoo hah about it in the area... people power that's what i say...

yes bournville is very nice and overpriced....a nice 3/4 bed with decent garden is about £250 - £300,000

agree that south side is very nice moseley, harborne, kings heath (if you lean towards hippydom! - though it has some fantastic tea/cafe shops.... not to mention hickory dickory's - the soft play saviour for parents in rainy days! - agree that the high street can be a bit grotty!)

I lived in Great Barr, Erdington and Selly Oak during my time in Brum and all 3 areas had pros and cons. If you've got a decent amount of money to spend I would go for the north side of the city in Four Oaks or Mere Green. South side, Harborne is lovely and Quinton is a nice cheaper alternative. I don't know if you know Brum but I loved living htere, fabulous city

My cousin lives in Erdington and where he lives is lovely, imo

I always get Edgbaston and Ladywood mixed up

I do think for what it is, Bournville is v. reasonable. I live in a supposedly dodgy part of Greater Manchester and I know I could get the equivalent house cheaper in Bournville.

One of the problems with Bournville, or certainly what we found when looking, is that, unless you have over about £270,000 to spend, you get very little house for your money. We ended up about 10 minutes away from Bournville, where a decent-sized 3 bedroom house was about £40,000 cheaper than it would have been in Bournville. Still have aspirations though, as it's a lovely place!

Kings Heath does have very good coffee shops btw and quite a thriving "middle-classness" about it away from the highstreet; there are some lovely "different" types of shops, for clothes, arty bits, hippy bits etc. Moseley has some good restaurants and pubs (the Morroccan restaurant is fab!); Selly Oak is student-ville but has good curry places!

harbourne is nice.
as is sutton coldfield.
some parts of edgbaston are nice, but interlink rapidly with ladywood and winson green which are two of the most deprived areas in europe

I would avoid Erdington like the plague. Saturday afternoon on Erdington High St is like some kind of Channel 4 documentary

Report
deaconblue · 03/04/2007 13:43

True about Erdington on a Saturday, I must admit. Full of people eating pies and smoking fags. But I had a lovely little flat and it's so easy for getting into Brum.
