When did you give your baby their first hair cut?

I think it's time but am torn between the people telling me it needs cutting and the people telling me to hold off as long as possible because 'it will never be the same again'. Do I chance swapping curls for a combover or risk my baby morphing into Cousin It?

Ds was 2!!

angelopal · 25/07/2017 09:35

DD 3.5 has never had it cut. It could probably do with a.bit of a trim now but she hates the sound of hairdryers so have never taken her yet.

YoureNotASausage · 25/07/2017 09:43

When it starts to look skanky you cut it. Yes, it will look different cut but actually better. You can always see the kids in playschool/nursery whose parents are too attached to their mullet and afraid to cut it!

YoureNotASausage · 25/07/2017 09:46

My usually sensible friend was visiting and I was surprised to see her 5.5yr old with her hair past her bum. From the shoulder down it is like a rats tail but she said she's afraid her child won't be blond anymore if she cuts it! She's not usually the type to not accept things for the way they are but hopefully she will realise in her own time that her dd is gorgeous even if her hair is naturally darker as she gets older.

llangennith · 25/07/2017 09:50

DS didn't have any hair to cut till he was about 15 months old. DD had fine blond hair that only reached her shoulders by the time she was 4 so not much help I'm afraid.
I'm not a fan of mothers of toddler boys who keep their hair long, usually because it's blond or curly.

CoodleMoodle · 25/07/2017 09:51

I asked MIL to give DD a trim just before she started preschool (just over 3). She had medium length wavy hair with ringlets at the bottom, and it's still the same now (3.4) but slightly less curly. She'll be having another trim before she goes back in September. Luckily DD is happy to sit and be combed/brushed/etc so I can keep it relatively neat!

tissuesosoft · 25/07/2017 09:54

DD was 15 months, curly hair and already at the base of her neck. Just had a small trim, hasn't affected her curls.

FlaviaAlbia · 25/07/2017 09:54

6 months maybe a bit earlier... DS was born with a head of black hair, but it grew blond after that and he had a wierd dip dye effect until it was cut Grin

Woodling · 26/07/2017 10:16

Thanks all. Mine's only 11 months so maybe I can hold out a bit longer. Your baby was ahead of the crowd FlaviaAlbia with the balayage!

Dd1 was about 3 because she was a baldy Grin

Dd2 is 18 months and will need a trim round the front soon because it's nearly reaching her eyes.

Dd3 is 5 weeks and came out with such a mop of dark hair that it looks like she could already do with a trim! I won't be touching it though, it's too lovely.

BigBlockofCheese · 26/07/2017 10:24

10 mths for ds. When it started to look overlong and scratty. No sentiment here. He's been having it cut every 6 weeks since about 18 mths. Unlike my own hair that is permanently tied up and gets a chop every few months usually just before a rare night out.

IWantACheeseburger · 26/07/2017 10:24

DS1 was about 11 months I think.
DS2 was 8 months, he's 14 months now and away to have his 3rd hair cut. He just has a ridiculous amount of hair! Both boys got their hair cut at the same time and DS2s is already in his eyes where as DS1 still looks fine.

BillywigSting · 26/07/2017 10:35

Ds was three because he didn't have enough to cut until then, even then it was just to tame the frizz of ends that were three years old, not to take out any length. It's never been longer than his ears and never reached his collar.

He has very fine (still baby hair) wavy blonde curls. He's 4 in October and it's been cut twice ever. Curls plus very fine and slow growing means it needs just a tidy every few months now.

It's lovely, though essentially impossible to make it look tidy takes after me

PeachesAndCream1 · 26/07/2017 12:08

My eldest son was 3 when I finally had his hair cut. Beautiful blond curls turned into coarse horrible hair with three crowns. Regret every minute of doing that. My youngest (now two), really really needs his cut. The front is past his chin, he gets good in it all the time, but NO. I NOT GONNA DO IT. He has beautiful soft ridiculous hair, but I loves it.

MsPassepartout · 26/07/2017 12:08

MIL gave DS2 his first haircut when he was about 18 months. We were staying at their house and his hair was getting in his eyes.

The main problem was that MIL only cut his fringe. So DS2 ended up with a hairdo that looked like King Richard III's.

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 26/07/2017 12:10

DS was 10.

Hmm

But he did donate it all to The Princes' Trust so I guess that makes up for the tangles, nits and everyone thinking he was my sister.

Mammylamb · 26/07/2017 12:24

At 20 months my son has had at least 6 haircuts!! He was born with a full head of hair and it just keeps growing

LemonBreeland · 26/07/2017 12:35

DS1 was about 6 weeks. He had a lot of hair

mrsnec · 26/07/2017 12:37

Both of mine have blonde curls and neither have had a haircut yet. Ds is 15 months and Dd is 3 in september.

I have no idea what to do with either of them!

ScarletForYa · 26/07/2017 12:38

Never! She's 5 and her hair reaches her bum. I'll only cut it if she wants to.

I love long hair!

BuntyMumofPie · 26/07/2017 13:14

My daughter is 4 and has never had a hair cut. It has grown beautifully and reaches just above her bum. We plait it most days.

My son is 21 months and his hair is defo mulletesque. I'm not afraid to cut it, I simply don't want to. I don't think it looks awful, it's just toddler hair. He has lovely blonde waves hair like his Dad and we want it to grow beachy/surfy style.

The whole cutting it to make it grow is nonsense. It's scientifically disproven. It just makes it look thicker because it's shorter. If they have split ends, it also makes it look healthier.

We don't blow dry/straighten or use products. We also only wash hair once a week (unless we've been swimming etc) and their hair is full, thick and healthy.

FlaviaAlbia · 26/07/2017 13:48

Although he was my pfb and gorgeous, it was hilarious Woodling Grin

Haha Joffrey I'm trying to imagine the sister confusion!

I'm certainly not precious about cutting it at all, just very intrigued as to how/if it would change. I'm talking about a little boy so the option to just let it grow indefinitely isn't really there. But having read these responses I think I'll just leave it until either it really does look awful or I can't hack being told it needs cut anymore by all the wannabe Vidal Sassoons

Dd is 4 and never had a hear cut apart from a long grown out dodgey fringe from her toddler years. But her hair is truly beautiful, long loose blonde ringlets, no split ends. It reachs her bum when wet, it's her pride and joy. It's starting to reach it's limit though it'll need trimming in the next 6 months.

DS is 18 months but hasn't needed a hair cut yet, it's slow growing and has tight curls , but its short enough it doesn't knot or need brushing, so no worries there. He'll be at least 2 before is needs cutting.

magratvonlipwig · 26/07/2017 18:37
