Is this the trampiest thing you've ever heard?!?

Brace yourself...

So I'm filling up the car with petrol today, 5 months pregnant, and a woman comes up to me and asks for a lighter and a fag... I replied "you don't want a lighter at a petrol station love" and she asked why!

Or has something even more bonkers happened to you today??

It isn't trampy. It is just stupid.

GiddyGiddyGoat · 21/04/2017 22:43

Trampiest??

LoveMyLittleSuperhero · 21/04/2017 22:44

I work at a petrol station, people don't actually ever surprise me anymore with idiocy. I think the guy who was sat on his motor bike filling the tank with unleaded who didn't understand why he couldn't light the fag in his other hand to smoke while he was filling took the biscuit though.

ShatnersBassoon · 21/04/2017 22:44

I'm not sure what trampy means. Rough?

She was definitely stupid.

Pigwitch · 21/04/2017 22:45

Ridiculous - are you on drugs?

MsMarvel · 21/04/2017 22:48

Thus poses lots of interesting questions.

What defines 'trampy' behaviour? Is it similar to 'skanky' 'slutty' 'chavvy' and similar?

Which leads to the next question of whether men can be 'trampy' or is it exclusive to women?

What in this example sets the woman apart as 'trampy'? If pushed, i would define a tramp as a homeless person, albeit a slightly derogatory term to use. Nothing in this example seems to indicate homelessness?

Would be interested for your opinion OP

elephantoverthehill · 21/04/2017 22:49

Was she a tramp because she was asking for a fag as well as a light? I do remember my DF being as for a light once from what we would have called then a 'tramp'. My DF gave him some matches out of his Swan box and the homeless man was very worried in case DF didn't have enough matches to see him home Grin

PurpleDaisies · 21/04/2017 22:50

Trampy? Hmm

RachaelCatWhisperer · 21/04/2017 22:51

Trampy to ask an obviously pregnant woman for a cigarette and lighter.

Definitely stupid at a petrol station!

MiltopMighty · 21/04/2017 22:52

Can you help define trampy? Like others, I am baffled as to what you mean.

RachaelCatWhisperer · 21/04/2017 22:53

Clearly trampy has different local connotations.

Scutty? Tasteless perhaps?

Megbert · 21/04/2017 22:54

Are you from Belfast, OP?

I find trampy means something different here than the rest of the UK. :o

Tw1nsetAndPearls · 21/04/2017 22:54

I don't know what trampy or scutty means.

MiltopMighty · 21/04/2017 22:55

I have never heard scutty either?

Does it mean rough?

RachaelCatWhisperer · 21/04/2017 22:57

Weird - I was hoping people might share even more bonkers tales of shameless behaviour, not end up having a dictionary corner moment!

Don't you think it's shocking though? Although later today I did see a very pregnant woman walking on the pavement smoking a spliff and drinking from a can of red bull...

It is shockingly stupid, could you not just have called it that?

Trampy can either mean slutty or dirty where I'm from
I can't figure out what it means when you're from OP - daft? Silly? Weird? Ironic?

Persemillion · 21/04/2017 23:00

Set a petrol station on fire is less important than the epithet used by the OP, of course. Judgemental? Yes, but this is not the point.

What part of the UK are you from? Round here trampy means tarty or slutty. That is why people were querying your comments. And what does scutty mean? (Sorry, I know this offends most mumsnetters, but I just wanted to clarify the meaning of the word)

I agree that wanting to light a cigarette in a petrol station is a monumentally stupid thing to do though.

My firefighter friend says the reason they say not to use mobiles at petrol stations is because it would stop you concentrating not because of sparks. Or so I'm told.

Meh I'm often pregnant and usually have a pack of fags and a lighter in my handbag.

I haven't smoked for years but I do work with an understandably very stressed out client group who often have no money at all due to the reason I work with them.

If I couldn't hand a desperate smoker without anything to her name a fag at what is likely to be one of the most stressful frightening moments of her life then I would feel pretty crap. And no none of them are even remotely trampy for asking me.
