Christmas traditions?

This year will be me and my partners first xmas with our son who will be 4 months old. We've been together for 8 years living together for 6. since we live close to his family we normally pile round his sisters house and have a massive roast with all his family.,
This year, my partner wants it to be the 3 of us. I don't really want to do a massive dinner as I'll end up cooking it all and it's too much bother for just me and him. If you don't eat Christmas dinner (as in roast and all the trimmings) in your house what do you do instead?
As bad as it sounds part of me doesn't see a point of making a big deal of this Christmas as our son will be so young. We're also buying our first house and it's proving to be very expensive on top of me being on maternity leave, so money is tight. What sort of Christmas traditions do you and your families do? I want ideas that go beyond cramming your face with as much food as possible.

If you're not bothered about all the trimmings then don't bother with them. Just cook a normal meal that you both like and have a lazy day.

As for traditions - I started one when DS was tiny. I wrote a letter to him from the elves and I wrote about things he's done in that year - both fun things and milestones he's met. He'll be 4 this Christmas and I figure he'll like to read them all when he's a little older.
