Advice on toddler sleeping alone

We had always been blessed as our first new born was a good sleeper. We would be able to put him in his own room and he would fall asleep alone. After a phase of sicknesses from May- July our 2.5 year old will not sleep alone in his bed unless one parent sits with him until he falls asleep. We live in an apartment and reassure him that we are just outside but every night is a battle and it's becoming harder and harder every night. We can't let him cry it out as he wakes up his 10 month old sister who's in the room next door. We have asked him to chose a teddy or something to sleep with but he refuses and just wants us to sit with him. Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions

Don't make it into a battle, everyone suffers that way. It's perfectly normal for a two-year-old to want company to fall asleep; mine certainly does. I'd just go with it until he doesn't need it any more. He's very young.

Can you do the "trick" when you say " oh hang on a sec mummy is just going to get a glass of water" and then just don't go back in?

Or do the sitting in the room quietly and then gradually get further and further away then out the door?

We have tried 'mummy needs to go to the toilet' or other excuses but he calls us back into his room. We sit in his room in silence while we wait for him to fall asleep. If we leave before he's asleep he stops us or calls us back into the room:-(
