There can't be many politicians who've saved more lives than Norman Fowler, who got the seatbelt law passed and took action on informing people about AIDS.

Thanks, Norman.

Any other people I should know more about?

There was a technology science fair in the 1960/70s in Cambridge where the seat belt was demonstrated along with sensors that stopped a car automatically crashing into anything, the sort of thing that we now see on a prius, slows the car if the one in front slows, and stops you if your cars heading into a brick wall, the car companies took up the seat belt because they wanted customers to survive to buy another car, and decided that technology that "saved" the car would mean fewer replacement cars were bought. Just think how many crashes would of been avoided.
