Can I make a bit of a plea to those of you who enjoy posting upsetting stories?

Can you please NOT put the subject of the shocking tale in the title?

Can you just put "An upsetting news story concerning children" or something similar?

Because I'm all for asking MN Towers to have a "Without In The News" button because I hate hate hate hearing about the terrible things that people do to babies and children and I don't want to see thread titles like that.

If that makes me blinkered, etc, then so be it.

Also, why do people feel the need to post links to stuff like this when it's just for people to go "oh how sad" to? I can understand if it's a policy thing, or there's a campaign that needs to be undertaken - but just for people to feel sad? Why?

Agree, don't like that either.

I agree that it doesn't need to be in the title (not sure what one it is)

but i think people who don't see anyone alld ay have a human need to share and talk about things just like you might talk in rl

Well said Hunker. I was just about to start this exact same thread.

Agree, hunker. I understand people's need to share but would like to have the option of not knowing what the story is about unless I choose to click on the thread.

i agree

Yes agree, please leave it out of the title. I deliberately avoid the news at the moment as I've got enough disasters happening with close family and I just don't want to hear about more for the moment.

I've seen the story now..i agree it is a bit salacious to post it like that

agree about whats in the title....

have i missed something though?

hunkermunker · 29/11/2006 14:13

Yes, Zippi, I thought that after I posted - if you do hear something shocking, it is nice to be able to talk about it if it's upset you.

But why upset a whole bunch of other people who haven't heard the news?

I can see your point there hunker....
If it isn't in the title then you have the choice of whether or not you want to read it.
I can't bear to find out something horrible has happened either..makes me cross for hours!

i agree hunker. I never look at them, sometmes in life there are things you'd just rather not know

I think we are all capable of picking up a news paper without having threads linking to articles like that one.

Sometimes when I see thread titles like "that" one, I do wonder if the OP is setting out deliberately to upset people.

Fine you read something and it upsets you and you want to talk about it ,but still...

Plus often the OP only posts once.

I agree, I agree, I agree. I don't want to read them either, they just make me cry. I don't know the one you mean but suspect I won't open it.

hear hear HM

if it's not linked to an actual campaign then I really don't need to read about it. We all know it goes on with out having it brought to our attention in detail.

Yep, I agree with Hunker too, have often thought that when I see one of those threads.

I'm sick of these horrifying news stories being thrust under my nose on MN all the time. It serves no purpose whatsoever, it's just upsetting and horrible. If people get their rocks off working themselves up into a frenzy of righteous indignation and having a good old hate-fuelled, hysterical mass emotional beanfeast, go and set up a newsgroup somewhere else and indulge it to your heart's content.

WideWebWitch · 29/11/2006 14:21

ok, now I know the one you mean.

agree agree agree

what do people expect? a whole thread of people going

'oh dear '
'oh dear '
'oh dear '
'oh dear '
'oh dear '
'oh dear '

doesn't help anyone imo

I don't watch the news and don't tend to read papers, I hear the news n the radio and that is enough for me, I even turn it down if kids in the car. Thanks but no thanks, I do understand the need and wanting to share but if we haven't already read about it perhaps we don't want to.

Report
WideWebWitch · 29/11/2006 14:23

Skribble, I don't either. I skim The Observer on a Sunday and that's it. Listened to the radio for the first time in AGES today and turned off as soon as it got to the world at one, I don't want to know.

I have to admit to joining in on a hate fuelled beanfest in the past. But the miage of the cruelty stays with me and I really really don't need that in my head unless there is something I can actively do to stop it.
