Police knocked round earlier saying our neighbour (single woman, mid 50's) had been burgled during the day.
I work full time but was in all day today and yday as DD is ill.i heard absolutely nothing and feel awful.
I also thought we were in a "safe area", I haven't heard about local burglaries. And I feel really angry on her behalf.
I knocked round to offer to help to tidy but she can't touch anything till they take prints tomorrow. I offered her our spare bed too.

As someone who used to work with offenders, I don't feel empathetic with their reasons, I feel angry that I didn't listen out for breaking glass.

It is weird just how vulnerable crime can make you, even if you are not the victim of it directly.

We live in a small village and have been here a year. In that time I have found out our house was broken into when the previous owners lived here so his expensive car could be stolen off the driveway. The downstairs doors and windows have screwdriver marks around the sills. My car was then targeted in the summer and my sat nav was stolen. It was old but it was mine and used regularly. There are weekly reports of theft in the village and I don't feel particularly safe.

It's a shame, but unfortunately there is crime all around us and you just have to take all the precautions you can and keep a low profile with the things you have. We don't have much worth stealing but I know that doesn't stop people from nicking what they can anyway.

Your neighbour must feel horribly vulnerable now, particularly since she is on her own.
