Relocating to London

Hi everyone. We are shortly relocating from Sheffield to London as my husband has a new job. We don't know London at all and I'm looking for some suggestions about good places to live - I have a 2yo and a 3mo. He'll be working close to London Victoria. I suspect we won't be able to afford more than a shoebox in London itself, so we'd be looking at commuter towns, preferably on the north or west. We're looking for somewhere with good schools and plenty going on but not too far out - so basically what everyone else is looking for! Any suggestions?

I'd start by looking at where the Victoria train routes run. I can't help more than that as our line runs into Waterloo.

Or look at what mainline stations connect to the Victoria line. There aren't too many stations on that line so it's relatively quick to get across London on it if you want to live North of London. Euston or Kings Cross so the world's your oyster.
