Any Mac/Entourage experts out there?

Have a number of different accounts, including hotmail, pop3 and IMAP. Can you explain why some HTML messages aren't downloading properly - seems to be particularly on POP accounts. Also, is there any way to get a read receipt for your messages? Finally, a coule of times I have somehow managed to completely delete a folder - the last time it disappeared and then reappeared. Most confusing, very worrying - what the hell am I doing wrong?

Can you tell I have recently come over from the (PC) dark side?

do you use safari as your browser? i find that lots of stuff doen't come through on that so use explorer for those instead (safari much more secure though).

having said that i don't know what i'm talking about so don't listen to me

Soph - you can't download IE for Mac anymore, which is pain. We use FIrefox as alternative browser.

Main problem I have is that entourage seems to be doing weird things to any links I receive in messages. For instance, was sent email that had [email protected] link in it. It ended up as [email protected] - and chances are that if I forward it it will end up in triplicate.

Welcome to the light.

  1. Some HTML messages not downloading properly. In Mail, have you tried Mail / Preferences / Viewing and enabling HTML content ? That might help. Also with some messages, in the viewing window, there is a 'Click to display Hidden Items / HTML' or something similar; this might reveal all properly ?

  2. Folders disappearing / reappearing... have you got used to the Apple triangle thingy by the mailbox / folder name in the left hand window ? (Click the big Mailboxes icon first). Basically they reveal / hide hierarchical / nested folders... maybe you just clicked a pointy trinagle indicator thingy by accident and 'collapsed' som folders you were looking at ? (You will find Send / Trash / In etc. all have separate folders for your various accounts).

  3. I don't use Entourage. Avoid MS products (except for Office, where choice is somewhat restricted) like the plague, personally. You could try just forwarding the message to yourself to see if it comes out OK ?

BTW - the Entourage thing just sounds you don't have 'display HTML messages as HTML rather than plain text' checked IYSWIM...

The expanded text in you list is the 'proper' (usually hidden) HTML associated with hitting the hyperlinked e-mail address which is presented to you onscreen IYSWIM.

I have ticked all those boxes, unticked them, ticked them again etc etc - it's not that. It doesn't seem to be a problem if I use mail as my email programme but it is withentourage, which is a shame as I prefer the layout and other bits and bobs.

There's Microsoft for ya, W2... LOL

Might it be Entourage / Preferences / Mail & News Preferences / Reply & Forward / 'Reply to Messages in the Format in which they were Sent' ?

Might explain the doubling up of links but not why they arrive looking all funny in the first place... will go click that box

But when you say they arrive funny, you mean e-mail addresses or URLs don't look like nice neat hyperlinks but long phrases (like wot u posted), right ?

That's the program simply not displaying an HTML encoded mail as HTML but just as plain text. The text you see is the hyperlink IYSWIM.

So why is it doing it when I have all the HTML buttons switched on? I just don't understand aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh

Sounds like it is being a very dim computer program. I presume you have quit / restart the application ?

If Apple's Mail program doesn't do this with these messages maybe you could consider a further move towards the light and use that instead of the Microsoft product ?

I have done - but have to say that Entourage is better laid out, it's easier to view messages and has some really good features. Mail seems pretty basic in comparison.

Eh?

Also, how can you request a read receipt in mail?

Not possible in Mail I don't think. Not sure it is an 'Internet-standard' feature tbh IYSWIM... is it a Microsoft gift to the world perhaps ?

Hi willow2, when you say that the msgs aren't downloading correctly do you mean that the text isn't displaying correctly? As in some of it is in hieroglyphics?

This may be a far too simple interpretation of your problem but I had exactly the same thing and it turned out to be the font I'd specified to display msgs in.

Why don't you just try forwarding it ? LOL. Just send it to yourself and use Apple's Mail to read the message. I think it would probably render just fine.

I did try that and it didn't work - so strange. Looked on the net and might be a problem with sender sending in rich text rather than html. Does this sound a possibility? Either way it is xxxxxxx annoying.

Thanks for forwarding offer - can't do it though as it is secret squirrel stuff and would have to kill you if I sent it to you!

Not tech-y enough to really understand, but I know that people get fooled by Entourage if they dont see the message "Download entire message". If you don't click that it can look like some text/attachments are missing. And if you forward it without having downloaded the entire message, the place you forward it to will only receive the part-message too.
