how can I help my elderly neighbours?

they are a lovely couple, in their mid 80s. Unitl last year they were still really active, B would go into our local town most days, by bus, and F would potter in the garden or with his car. F still drove, in fact he bought himself a new car last year which i thought was great, they did their own shopping, cooking, went to the local pub etc. All was good.
But then suddenly, things have gone a bit down hill for them. F is now using two sticks, has a nasty hernia problem and is really looking his age. B feel and broke her hip and is still only managing to walk with the aid of a frame.

Their family help with shopping etc and take them out sometimes to the pub or bring in fish and chips. I help when i can with getting them to the opticians, doctors and today took them to the cafe int eh local park for a coffee and change of scenery.
But they would really like to get out more and have more visitors. I'm not assuming that - F tells me as much. I wondered about contacting Age UK to see if they have a list of volunteers who might be willing to come and visit them. Would that be the right thing to do, do your think? OR who else might be able to help. I wouldn't arrange anything behind their back but obviously just given them the details of any services or clubs etc they might like to attend. I really feel for them. F still has this new car in the garage but he's lost his confidence on his feet and hasn't driven it in ages. I need constant fresh air and outdoors and I really feel for them being inside all day.

How can I help?

We could do with 'Sure Start Childrens Centres for the elderly' couldn't we ? Grin
I have the same situation with our neighbours - I wish I could do more on a practical level but it's not always possible to squeeze anything more into the day/week, is it?
It might be worth contacting your local Churches, or maybe community centres, as a lot have things like lunch clubs or various fellowships that meet in the day time. As you say, it would be a change of scenery and some company once a week. Maybe your local library ? I know they vary, but some offer clubs, and others are quite good at acting as community signposts.

thanks BackforGood. I'll try the library tomorrow as they are usually helpful in our local one. And it's church parade this sunday so I can ask there too. Oh, I do love it when it falls into place so easily Smile

I volunteer for this organisation as a driver. Not sure if they are suitable for your neighbours, but need more recognition. They're brilliant.

Wow, thanks malovitt that looks like a great organisation Smile
I've made a note of the details, and will share, not only with my neighbours, but with some people at my Church. Thanks for the link.
