Would I be mad to 'sell' my story to a trashy mag?

God I need the money.
It's the one about dd surviving termination.

I planned to tell her when she was older and not keep it secret. Family know the story.

But is it fair?

BooBooGlass Mon 20-Jun-11 18:46:57

Not fair AT ALL. Don't do it.

belgo Mon 20-Jun-11 18:47:52

I remember your story well, and it is a wonderful story, but no I'm sorry I don't think you should sell it. Not only is not not fair on her (think about if her friends found out about the story when she is a bit older). But also not fair on you because you then hold yourself open to all sorts of criticisms for having the abortion in the first place. People can be very cruel.

You may get a quick few hundred quid but do you really want to attract comment from anyone and everyone about it?

AnyFucker Mon 20-Jun-11 18:49:11

no, love, don't do that

I remember your story, and it was lovely and all that

but no, not this

BooBooGlass Mon 20-Jun-11 18:49:44

If it were me, I'd spend the next x number of years wondering if everyone who gave me even a glance had recognised me because of it. Totally unfair to use your dd's story for profit.

You would be utterly barking. Seriously, there are many, many reasons why this is a dreadful plan.

TrilllianAstra Mon 20-Jun-11 18:50:02

You'd want it to be worth a LOT of money to make up for the hassle.

MissingMySleep Mon 20-Jun-11 18:50:30

no because its not really your story, its her story

AnyFucker Mon 20-Jun-11 18:50:48

the gormless photos they make you pose for should be enough to put you off smile

belledechocchipcookie Mon 20-Jun-11 18:51:57

They will pay you a few hundred pounds and will write it in a way that you don't wish yourself to be portrayed. Personally, I wouldn't want my child to know that I had attempted to terminate them, she'll go through hell when she's older.

hobbgoblin Mon 20-Jun-11 18:52:24

Thought as much. Just trying to think of ways to get financially independent of her father and move on.

mrsravelstein Mon 20-Jun-11 18:52:49

and the fact that they always make people out to be total idiots, to the point where you wonder why the person in the article ever agreed to be in it

My sister was approached to tell her story to a 'crap mag'. Actually, she was moderately keen to do so. But when she realised that she'd have to sign a document saying she wouldn't talk about her story to anyone that the magazine didn't authorize she told them to take a running jump.

hobbgoblin Mon 20-Jun-11 18:53:30

Is on the list with car boot sales and escorting.

Last idea a joke.

Kids - and adults! - can be so so cruel. Are you prepared for being stopped in the street or in the supermarket and having strangers give you their opinion (or abuse). I have read stories about people who have sold their story in magazines. It often ends badly, with them getting all sorts of hassle and abuse.

What about your child being teased at school? Kids can be vicious. Can you imagine the sort of things that she could have said to her? I can. Not nice.

Don't do it. What would you get? a hundred pounds? Two hundred? The money would be long gone and she'd still be getting tormented.

And you'd have to tell her all about it first. Imagine finding out about it after it's been in a magazine. And what if she really REALLY didn't want her life story - cos it's hers as much as it's yours - to be sold?

belgo Mon 20-Jun-11 18:53:53

A one off payment from a magazine is not going to help you be financially independent in the long term.

DuelingFanjo Mon 20-Jun-11 18:55:27

can you be sure that the mag won't make it into an anti-abortion story and that DD won't be effected badly by it? Personally I wouldn't do it.

TheOriginalFAB Mon 20-Jun-11 18:57:20

TBH I would rather give you some money than say yes, do it.

AnyFucker Mon 20-Jun-11 18:59:18

I was going to say that, fabby

hobb, I can let you have a fiver smile

JennyPiccolo Mon 20-Jun-11 19:00:20

yeah, tell us the story and we'll all give you a few quid.

Katisha Mon 20-Jun-11 19:02:42

They def won't write it in a way you recognise. I would advise against.

arrange a funny "accident" for exP, film it, and send it to You've Been Framed

TheOriginalFAB Mon 20-Jun-11 19:08:38

Just thought I should say I feel differently having read some posts, than maybe others do. My mother told me she went to get me aborted. I have never forgotten it. C;ear;y there is a lot more too it, and different to you, especially as she is a terrible mother, whereas you are looking after your baby but no, don't do it.
