What is a 'memory card' for a play station and where can I get one?

My DS has just bought a 2nd hand playstation from a car boot sale.

Entirely predictably, the blasted thing is not working and I think that it is because the memory card is missing.

Now, I am completely ignorant of these things and was not best pleased when I found out that DS had wasted his pocket money on this. However I have a rather tearful 8 year old here and want to help him get it working.

Please?

hi, the memory card just stores games so that you can continue playing later on, saves high scores etc, it wont stop the playstation from working, im afraid if its not working its because of another reason, they dont actually come with memory cards, you buy them seperately, you can play without a memory card.

is it a ps1 or 2?

It should work without a memory card. But some games need one to play so best place to get them is any game store or anywhere that sells playstations. They range in price, cheapest being around 8 quid. But they last for a very long time. Not sure if that's any help.

It shouldn't matter if it is a PS1 or PS2. They should both work without a memory card. Are you sure that you have the right format of game in there? A PS2 game willnot work on a PS1 machine. If the console works you should be able to play a CD on it. Or you maybe had a dodgy seller?(I hope not!)

thats why i asked spursmum, in case the game was not compatible with the machine.

Thanks everyone.

I'm sorry, I have no idea what model it is as it is not on the console. There are no instructions or packaging with it. It's probably a PS1.

If it is supposed to work without a memory card, can you make any other suggestions where we are going wrong?

Our telly is rather old but does have the correct connections.

Sorry spacecadet, great minds think alike!! Just to carry on from fairydust, if the console is light grey or white-ish its a PS1 if its black, dark grey or silver then its a PS2.

its a ps1 then.

it's sounds like a PS1 - so you need to make sure it's PS1 games that are used as PS2 games don't work on it

lol spursmum, i know i only thought of it because when ds got a ps2 not all his ghames would play that he had with his ps1.

it should say on them whether they are suitible for ps1 or 2.

PS1 games are generally in a double size cd box.

PS2 games aer in dvd type box and play staion 2 at the top
