Picture the scene...

From the edge of every terrace and every step hang brilliantly white stalactites, and you can hear the joyful splashing of the waters of the hot springs as they cascade down over slopes where their flow is impeded only by clumps of oleanders.

Nearby is an oasis of refreshments, in our Pamukkale residence, air conditioned and with white washed generously proportioned rooms, with Mellors at the ready, to offer Turkish Massage to anyone who wishes.

The NMBs are in their element, whereas the bishops seem to have found their speedoes again.

Priest's hole is at the back, in a quiet shaded area, stocked with What Car magazines, Turkish rugs and Turkish delight

Had a great start to the day this morning, my 'sweet' daughter told me to f* off! Super!! sigh! She is due on any day now but even when she isn't due she is vile most of the time!

Happy news and sad news from ChateauRacing ....

On Wednesday I had a day off work (due to cut backs, unpaid ) and I decided not to tell the family, to prevent being sucked in to organising and tidying and generally being-in-the-wrong being a mum, and I spent the day alone in a nearby city - the first day I have spent on my own since Wriggle was born. It was a bit strange and uneasy at first and then ... lovely. I discovered, among other things, TKMaxx and I had never seen so many beautiful things!

Then I went with friends to Longleat, which, to my suprise and , I love and we had a wonderful day - great meet-up -place, by the way.

Then we got home and found that the guinea pigs had escaped, and RacingPig is lost ... for ever, I fear ...

Oh I hope RacingPig turns up!

We got new sofa and chairs this week! Well, my mum got a new corner sofa, and gave us her 3 seater and 2 chairs, and we had to get rid of our sofas. Turned out to be quite difficult to give them away!

New ones are recliners! Misty the cat has found he can fit under the 3 seater in the middle that has no recliner bit. He stays in there for hours!

Sorry to hear about RacingPig Unserpent. I hope he wanders back when he's hungry.
All is madness here chez Hatita. We're moving to Mexico City in approx three weeks and still have no where to live and no school to which to send Kittenito or nursery for Gatita. Mr. H is off on a flying visit there on Monday tasked with not coming home until this situation is resolved.
I'm putting the finishing touches to my job application to the very highly regarded university that currently has a job opening. I hope to send it before we leave, since applications close on 30 August. I so want this job, but am not sure if I am enough of a "diva" to qualify. After all, I don't get invites to go on national television like Mr. H.

Freecycle is good for finding new homes for sofas.

Incidentally, appropos 'sofas', I was talking to a friend about what you should call things. She is very consciously working class now living with middle class private school farmer. She said that she had been brought up to say 'couch' and 'toilet', but had been told in her nerw life that you should say 'sofa'. In my family (admitedly of foreign extraction). I grew up saying 'couch' but 'lavatory'. I was wondering whether in the US, Canada and Ireland words are as class coded as they are here?

In Ireland we don't have the big class thing going on that seems to happen in the UK. Most of the country is small rural town with a mix of incomes, no such thing as rich and poor towns or to even areas within towns to some extent. For example, my dh comes from poor background (dad on disability, mom worked as a laundry woman in an old persons home, tiny rural ex council house, and they only had an outside loo until dh was 11 and had no bath/shower ) and I come from quite a wealthy family but we were raised on the same country road as each other, all of one min walk away from each others houses. Our parents shopped in the same shops (v few shops to choose from ). And if we were the same sex we would have gone to the same school. So really in rural areas there is no difference apart from income between classes. In the cities of course there are definate areas.

I was raised to say sofa and loo. Dh said sofa and toliet. Irish people always say toliet not loo.

Not class coded in the US but definitely regional. Although you'll probably find that 100% of the people say bathroom.

In fact I was quite uncomfortable saying toilet for a long time when I moved here and still think it's strange that it's used since we Americans always hear how proper the UK people are and would never think of toilet as a proper word, IYSWIM?

I still tend to say loo, BTW, or bathroom.

Why is toilet not a proper word? Is it improper, or is it just not a real word? I do love words, with all their baggage and connotations. Bathroom, to me, of course, is a place where you have a bath, but then, logically, so is 'lavatory', and indeed, 'toilet'. In French, toilet is always plural 'les toilettes' but trouser(s) are singular ....

I usually say sofa and loo. I think my parents have a settee though. I'm sure there's also a (supposed) class thing with serviette or napkin as well but I can't remember which is the 'posh' version (unless we have guests it tends to be kitchen roll in our house ).
