chip butties at nursery

I have a friend who has a 3 yr old and 1 yr old at a private day nursery. Last week when she asked the children what they had for lunch they told her chip butties from the chippy. She questioned the nursery manager the next day and it turns out the oven broke down while cooking lunch that day so she and the cook went to the chippy and got chips for the kids and buttered some bread. Friend was a bit shocked at this and so was I really, esp as friend only allows them homecooked meals at home and no greasy food, but what else could they have done without an oven?

Couldn't they have at least bought some fish as well or mushy peas?

hunkermunker · 07/08/2005 18:24

Sandwiches, salad, any "picnic" food?

KemalsStilletto · 07/08/2005 18:30

They can definately afford it jane313 with all the fees they get!

I agree hunkermunker, sandwiches and salad usually go down well at tea time in the nursery and it would have been so much moe popular with the parents than chip butties!

my mum cooks in a nursing home and that is exactly what they do if the electric goes off.

gigglinggoblin · 07/08/2005 18:41

erm...go to the chippy i mean, just realised that was a bit vague

KemalsStilletto · 07/08/2005 18:41

mmmmm fishfinger sandwiches. Mine are very upmarket though! as I have may and caper (I don't bother chopping them so I can't call it tartare sauce). I hate them with ketchup.

MrsGordonRamsay · 07/08/2005 19:05

OTH

It was a one off, my DS negotiates for Daves chips every Friday, he doesn't always get them but really enjoys them, when he does. BTW we are talking 10 chips if he is lucky.

They were given chips from a chip shop.

Now, if you had said they had gone to McD, I would have been spitting feathers.

However, I do feel that parents should have been informed as they arrived to collect.

IlanaK · 07/08/2005 19:36

As a nursery owner who has had the oven break down before, you do NOT go and get chips! I am quite shocked by that. We just made sandwhiches, had yoghurts, fruit etc. Anything that did not need cooking or heating. We always have that type of thing to hand at nursery anyway, but even if they did not, I am sure there must have been a local shop where they could have got something healthier.

Be interested to hear what Bubble says!

don't understand what's wrong with chips from a good chippie as a once in a while thing .. potato / sunflower oil .. no salt I would assume

wouldn't offend me at all (and I'm a bit of a food facist at times)

Wouldn't bother me either, as long as it was a one-off.

I should add that recently the school that supplies dd's nursery with lunches had an oven break down so couldn't provide hot meals. The nursery staff went out and bought rolls, ham and cheese from the deli, and fruit for pudding ... and the majority of the parents complained that their child hadn't had a cooked meal for lunch. Many of the parents complained to the head teacher because she hadn't been and bought fish and chips for the children instead.

You can't please all of the people all of the time ...

anniebear · 07/08/2005 19:44

As a one off I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I imagine the children would have been very excited, I know my nearly 4 year olds would have been!!!!!

Now if it was every week............

As a parent, can't say I would have minded.

As a nursery manager (I'm not - hypothetically ) I think I would have gone for the sandwiches option. You can't assume all parents will be OK with chippies

katymac · 07/08/2005 20:18

On a day with out electricity (I knew in advance) I geva the children cold baked beans (the ones I was weaning) and the others all had sandwiches, but I have also been known to have a meal of all fruit & veg - raw........(not for the babies)

btw i lit the wood burner to heat water for bottles {smile]

JulieF · 07/08/2005 21:28

I wouldn't have had a problem with a chip buttie. In moderation there is nothing wrong with chips, they are only potatoes and oil after all, nothing processed and young children need some fat in their diets.

I would have preferred ds to be given some fish as well though to make it more of a meal. I would definately prefer him to be given fish and chips for lunch than something cold if he was only going to be getting sandwhiches for his tea.
