Nurseries

quality care for young children DOES NOT exist in SOME private setting

i have worked in various types of childrens settings(both private and Sure Start)i believe that Sure Start settings are good places for children to be as the staff do genuinely care for the children, they are given healthy meals made with good ingredients and staff are much, much happierthan private nursery staff(better pay, work conditions, ratios in place more etc)

private settings are entirely different.as i have worked in them i have seen what goes on behind the scenes, i believe that i can give parents an idea of what does happen at private setings.

please note that i am not talking about any private settings in particular, just what i ahve seen in different private settings that seems to be an all over thing-
1.young babies who cannot move being left in
bouncy chairs all day, except for sleep, feeding and nappy changes. staff are often told not to pick up the baby for fear of "spoiling them" and having them liking attention too much.
2.young babies who cry are often called"spoilt"
3.lots of bitching about childrens families.one mother(whos baby was a rather small and dainty 6 month old)was accused of "trying to keep the baby small"by not feeding her meat and bread like the OLDER babies, when infact this baby ate well and has family members who are gluten sensitive.
4.a carer smack the back of a young childs hand.
5.frequent use of the word "naughty".
6.really rubbish food-cheap sausages and fish fingers, over indulgence in chips and white pasta, tinned fruit, powedered custard and sponge cake that is bought in in tubs and heated in the kitchen, yoghurts that are supermarket basic, full of sugar and cost 7p
each.
7.a soil area at the back of the setting that the children like to play with toy cars and other toys in.this area does not have a lid and i have seen cats jumping in and out of here.
8.one setting has radiators that are covered with BLANKETS to "protect" children from burns.
9.toilets frequently get smelly and dirty during the day.they are cleaned at the end of the day but staff do not keep on top of them during the day, so children often have to use dirty toilets.
10.children who have had toileting accidents left in wet underwear as staff do not want to change them.
11. too many children in the setting.one setting was registered for 15 children but would take up to 20 on any one day, also instead of the legal 1:3 adult to baby carer, this setting used 1:4 for babies.

these are just some of the things that i have seen in various childrens settings and just thought i would mention them here.

What's the purpose of this thread?

Are you a bitter childminder with no mindees?

Very helpful to those of us with small children in nursery. Thanks.

Surely you should be reporting all this to the appropriate authorities, not listing it all anonymously here?

Parents do worry about this sort of thing, and do all they can to find good care for their children. I don't think your post is helpful TBH.

...and your point is?

you should report that particularly nursery to ofsted

these threads seem to crop up a lot. Someone coming in with 'helpful' information about what they have seen as a nursery worker which only create worry (And debate) and are pretty pointless.

like this one

well i think the important thing is for parents to check their indivual setting before using it, i am a sahm so havent put dcs in a childcare 'nursery' but have used two creches and dd is now at preschool, one creche at the leisure centre was excellent, the other a surestart community creche while i did a course was terrible and i quit course because i wasnt happy to leave my baby there as staff were clueless, dds preschool is excellent i checked up on the care at all three settings and observed other children there which is how i knew which was good and which was poor

I hope you did the professional thing and handed in your notice and reported these establishments to OFSTED and social services.

These threads are never constructive and always degrade into a bun fight. Many mumsnetters NEED to work and finding childcare is terrifying.

For me its not just about money. Its my mental health. I know that I will slide into severe depression if I am a SAHM. It has happened to me before.

I took my son out of a bad nursery and his next nursery was excellent.

My son also once went to a truely dire childminder. It was so bad that my son only spent one session with her. Thank God he was old enough to tell me what an evil witch she was. (I am sure there are excellent child minders out there.)

I wish there were more surestart nurseries, so that children were looked after by people who care about kids rather than trying to make a fast buck.

kiow8 - what an utter, utter useless post.

Did you report it? It's funny how the style of your writing sounds like other posts on the same topic.

If you didn't report these different scenarios you talk a load of wank.

We are all evil inhumane witches for putting our children into childcare and are going to go to a special mummy hell.

Or perhaps this is an ad for SureStart?

there is always some precious moments nursery hating zealot waiting to recycle an urban myth of child cruelty

they might even spout some biddulph for effect

biddulph who for years espoused benefits of nursery, selling book, doing talks making money and then laterly had a road to damascus like conversion and (you guessed it) started writing and selling books, doing talks (making money) about the evils of nursery

I am sure there are appalling badly managed nurseries out there run by silly young girls who have a level 3 and think theyre managers.
However there are some lovely nurseries mine included, I could get a job and earn a lot more than I do as an owner, but I do not.
I love my job, my staff are handpicked, I continually given them training and staff development. My baby goes to my nursery!
I do hope you reported these nurseries but I doubt it, people like you enable these horrible places to exist.
If anyone wants to ask about what really goes on in nurseries please feel free to ask me. xx

I am sure these type of places do exist. I visited one with a group of junior school children for the afternoon and it was a grim, depressing place to be with lots of 16 year old girls smelling of fags and openly sneering at the children

HOWEVER a lot of my friends - well off, loving and intelligent working mothers send their children to local nurseries and I cannot believe that they would not place them in pfb standard lovely nurseries.
