London nursery cost

Hi all,

I’ve just been to view a nursery and was given the fee list. It’s £87 a day. In south London.

New to the nursery and childcare game as it’s my first baby. He’s 7months old.

How does the daily rate fare compare to what you are paying? What do you pay and what does it include? Is it term time only?

Fee includes nappies and wipes and milk/food

Thanks

That seems about right. Most nurseries are in the region of £1,600/month based on 5 days per week 8am - 6pm.

Are you eligible for tax free childcare? It eases the burden very slightly.

I'm in NW6 and pay £1,060/month for based on 5 days per week 9am - 4pm and I use an au pair for wrap around care. It works out the same total monthly cost as full time nursery but has the added flexibility that I'm not stressing over drop off and collection and of course when the kids are sick the au pair takes care of them meaning I don't miss work (kids at nursery get sick A LOT). Is that an option for you?

What are the hours?

The nursery is open 7.30-6.30pm each day for 51 weeks in the year.

What is the tax free childcare? I know there were childcare vouchers that are now expiring but haven’t yet fully delved into it.

I guess the half hour on each side adds to flexibility for parents.

Sounds right to me.

We're in Kent and we're paying £46.50 a day. DS is full time (7:30-6:30) so it works out over £1k per month.

Tax free childcare - you pay in some money, the government tops up upto 20%.

It varies very much according to your exact area in London. I have heard of fees from £40 a day to £135+ a day.

Those fees don't sound extortionate for London. Have you looked at childminders? They may be cheaper.
