Has anyone set up their own playgroup session and if so, does it pay well?

I think it only works if you can justify the investment in toys/equipment by hosting a lot of sessions and charging quite a lot, and you're in an affluent area

I know of two companies making profits from playgroups in my area.

One does party soft play and toy hire, so already has all the equipment and just does playgroups as an added extra in the school holidays when the regular playgroups are closed.

The other runs playgroups all over the city so it's full time going from one venue to another to host them, I think they do ok.

In general most playgroups are run by churches, community centres, and groups of parents and they're not profit making at all

Very expensive to set up. Also if you're going down the profit making business route there are a LOT more legal requirements. As pp said, most playgroups are church or community run non-profits. Often it's run by a bunch of mums who all pitch in each week.

A franchised class like Monkey Music or something might be easier

We run a charity play group in the local village hall. We often make a loss, rather than a profit. You will be competing against all the low cost, non profit groups and Childrens centres, unless you are offering something specific like music, dance, baby signing etc.

Well I had an idea that I thought would be different and may work ... incorporate a playgroup with a sensory class.

My local children's centre do sensory sessions for free at baby clinic.

I think the world is overrun with 'sensory classes'.

There are a lot of sensory classes in my area, including free (or 50p) ones at the children's centres.
