How much of details do you get from Nursery?

My DS is 13 month, we started nursery 2 weeks ago, only 8-1pm everyday. He is adjusting nicely, no cry at drop off and he started to have some sleep there too. It's spacious, friendly, they have regular garden time, and I liked the atmosphere of it.

My problem is they don't have daily book, I don't really have detailed information about his day. They have weekly book, which is more like swift message across the week. and they tend to give me very brief message when I pick him up. And only if I ask. Stuff like did he nap? Did he sleep? How was his mood today? Etc. There is a headmistress (and manager at nursery) who deals with my questions, sometimes I text her how he is doing. She always says he is doing very well and everything is fine..

Maybe it's the first mum nervousness, but this puts me little uncomfortable. And two times, he came with dirty nappy and I raised the issue, both time she said, they changed nappy just before I picked him up and he must pooed on our way home. But this never happened before, and I know he likes pooing standing up with funny face. I would know if he pooped in the buggy.

I mean.. It's not a big deal that if they missed nappy change, but I would like some kind of honest community so that I can trust them, and pick up from where they leave him.

How much of details do you get from your nursery? And if not, are you okay with it?

We get quite a lot of information:

  • all nappies and times
  • nap times
  • milk and water
  • What was given for meals and how much eaten
  • General update about the day such as activities and what was played with. Ant major developments like pulling herself to standing.

On occasion we might get to hear about minor accidents or get a note about needing something e.g. more wipes.

It sounds like you're not getting much info. Can you quickly check nappy before you leave?

Hi

All nurseries should as per ofstead guidance/ regs keep a log of nappy changes and whether they are soiled or wet. Some nurseries check every hour others may have a system of every 3-4 hours. Regardless a log must be kept. Wet nappies is an indication of health and most parents would want to see this info. So I would ask where their log is and if they don't have one ask why not.

They should also monitor their progress in accordance with early years which again is all regulated by ofstead. So how do they log progress online or on paper? At my DS's nursery I can access his file at anytime but it's kept onsite. They should be monitoring his physical, social and emotional developments and ensuring they are working towards them achieving certain milestones etc.

If ever you're uneasy or unhappy about anything have the confidence to say so, unlike school you are paying for a service with a nursery.

Xxxx

We get a sheet every day with times of nappy/ potty and if wet or dirty. All meals and snacks and how much they had. Times and duration of naps, toys and activities done and whether they've had a change of clothes. Then any other info- accident forms, calpol, need nappies etc.

We get a book home with 2 pages filled out every day. It tells me meals and snacks, how much of it she ate, how many cups of water. How many nappies - wet, soiled or dry. Also tells me the time of her nap. And says a few things about what she has done that day. They sometimes pop a photo in for me too. My mum picked her up but she says her key worker always gives my mum a little summary of how her morning has been.

Oh and if any change of clothes too. And also where she napped - in the little beds or in her favourite bouncy chair!

I just get told at pick up when he's slept, what he's eaten and what they've done today. There's a development folder but I rarely look.

If you think they're being lax with the nappy change, check him before you leave the premises. Surely you can smell it?

When our DS was in the baby room
We got a little book filled out with nappy changes so times and all his meals and how much he had eaten of each one. Plus a little bit about what in particular he had enjoyed that day. Now he is in toddlers there is more children so we don't have the book now but still get a complete run through of his day including nap times etc.

Mine have a weekly food planner so you can see what's for lunch etc. Then another laminate next to it their name and tells you how much they ate at each meal/snack. Another laminate on the wall telling you nap time and duration. They only did the daily diaries upto 14 months but they do give us a summary of what they have been upto. Also get weekly pictures via a secure website.
They leave notes as to what's planned this week etc

At the very basic level I would expect written info daily about nappies, sleep, food eaten.

At this age, we got a daily sheet of info:

Times of all a lot changes and whether they were wet/dirty

Times of all meals/snacks/drinks - what they ate and how much

Times of naps

A note of what activities they even done/toys they played with

Now she's older (2) we no longer have this - it's more like what you describe - but that's ok because she can tell me herself what she ate/if she liked it/what she played with, so I only need the nursery to tell me anything out of the ordinary, e.g if she was off her food/didn't nap, etc

We had a daily feedback sheet at that age, with nappies, naps, meals and activities plus a verbal summary of the above.

Now at two we just get the verbal summary, it covers the same things though. You need to know things like how much he's slept and eaten so I'd ask them to provide more information.

DS is 7 months old and we get

Times and amounts of bottles
Nappy changes
Naps
How much food he had (they're helping us with weaning him)
Details of activities e.g. What toys he played with, whether they had messy play

This isn't something they do for every parent automatically, though, but they asked me if I wanted that kind of information during the induction as he's still young. Maybe you need to ask for it specifically?

I would ask them for a little note of nappy changes, if he ate well and sleep times. Usually it's pretty standard for at least the under 2's but they shouldn't mind accommodating this. If they do cause an issue over this then they are not good nursery.
