Nurseries

Sleeping... Cots vs Floor mats

Hi All

I'm hoping you can help. We're currently looking at nurseries for our first baby (not born yet, but waiting lists apply) and we've narrowed it down to two! Both are quite convenient for us, same price, include the same things etc... We have a minor preference for one, but...

One nursery has a 'sleep room' with cots and individual bedding for baby and toddler, whereas the other has a little area segragated in the corner of the main baby room, with a couple of cots in, but lots of floor mats, that apparently the children are happy to sleep on!?!

From seeing the cot room, we think that may be better, but would love any views people have as to these mats (we've nicknamed them 'dog beds' as that is what they look like) versus a proper sleeping room - will it actually make a difference!? We have a slight preference for the 'dog bed' one, but the sleep situation is putting us off - should it?

Any help/advice/experience would be much appreciated

Thanks

Id go for the one with a separate sleep room, irrespective of whether they used floormats or cots.

I would not use a nursery that didn't have cots for babies. Mats are fine for toddlers but not suitable for tinies.

Our nursery has nests rather than cots for the babies and then sleeping mats for the over twos. I think it is a space issue but the babies all sleep well and look very comfy!

What age does the room go up to?
Where both DC went they had a 0-2 room, one end of the room was set up for sleeping with a couple of cots. The babies went in the cots, then as they got older they would be put on the mats instead. Mats were then used for the other rooms (2-3 and pre-school).

All the children were fine.

How old will your DC be when s/he goes into nursery? Floor mats are common practice after twelve months.

Yes, we had mats at dd1's nursery, after they came out of the baby room.

My issue would be lack of a sleeping room, not sleeping mats for older ones per se.

My DS has mats at nursery. It's actually quite practical as toddlers can get up themselves when they wake up rather than screaming to be taken out of their cot and waking everyone up. At nap time the staff sit between the mats and stroke and pat the children to help them sleep. They all look so cute when they sleep

We used 3 nurseries and mats were the norm. They were always in the main room. Only the tiny babies had the 2-3 cots at the back of the rooms. It's really good to get them to learn to nap in the room in baby rooms. they all tend to go down together with dim lights and staff sitting with them in the rooms after 12 mths

My childs nursery allows them to sleep in their prams. On a nice day the let them sleep in the conservatory/canopy so they are getting fresh air whilst they sleep. Would they let you leave your pram/buggy?
