Retained placenta

Hi, I have a 10 year old daughter and would like to have another baby but feel too scared due to a retained placenta after my last birth. I have been reading up on it and there would be an increased risk of it happening again and if it does I have also read it can cause death (though I am guessing this is rare!) I am just wondering if anyone is experiencing anything similar or has had a perfectly normal delivery a second time after having a retained placenta?

Totally understand your concern. I had a retained placenta with my first DD 19 years ago and ended up with surgery to remove it after her birth. It was traumatic and unexpected. I was worried it would happen with DD2 a few years later. It didn't. But I talked it through with midwives and we / they had a plan ready just in case but it was a textbook 2nd birth with no complications. No two labours and births are the same. Hope everything works out ok for you.

Does the hospital where you delivered offer birth debriefings? They can do them up to twenty (or more!) years later and mine really set my mind at rest for the second birth.

Hi, I had a retained placenta with my first and had horrific flashbacks afterwards of the removal. So much so that I had a planned section for my second. This could be an option of its a huge issue for you? I had a VBAC with my third and placenta came out no problem at all. Good luck x

Thanks for the responses. I have read about the elective sections and think this may be a good option for me. How was the recovery after the section? X

Hi. I have 2 years 10 months between my DDs. Had a retained placenta first time but it slithered out naturally (yuk!) second time.

Can I ask what you're scared of? If it's intrusive surgery after vaginal birth, then that would be a certainty with a CS, but just a chance after a v birth as the placenta may deliver this time. But I shouldn't try and second guess your fears.

Hi, no it's not so much that. I found it quite traumatic last time and it took a while to bond as I got took straight to theatre after the birth so didn't get to feed her or dress her. I felt quite depressed after for quite a while and I just feel if I had more control and knew what to expect it would be better for me mentally and emotionally X

Yes, I see. Good luck with your decision. X
