...and do they have the same taste as you? Just interested really, although any recommendations for music that soothes grumpy newborns welcome!

My DD (9mths) just loves it when I sing to her. I thought at first it was because I was singing songs from our music group and she associates that with fun but it is any song just the fact I am singing to her.

She also seems to like piano music (perhaps because it is quite generally high pitched?) and cello (perhaps because it is generally low pitched?). They just seem to catch her attention more when they are on in the background.

When she was a baby and we were desperate to soothe her we did leave Classic FM on all night and she slept quite well for her at the time. Not sure if this is just coincidence though! I think they generally play quieter classical music at night so you won't be woken up by the 1812 overture!

She also used to stop crying and listen when we made deep humming noises when she was tiny... impossible to sustain for any length of time.

What I do remember is that phase didn't last long and she soon became a lot more settled!

My DD1 is almost a month old, and currently seems to be shunning 'soothing' music (baby classics, Zero 7 etc) and only drops off to sleep to rock music played loud. Which is fine, if confusing.

DD has always been a hip hop/R&B girl (so total opposite to mine and dh's taste in music). Now she's a bit older, she sings and claps along to them as well

She always been a big fan of the Balamory theme tune as well - not interested in the programme itself though

White Stripes soothed both of my dcs!

DD is almost 11 months and loves soft rock.

We were playing 'sweet child of mine' when eating lunch the other day and she danced all the way through the intro!

DD loved Mozart Requiem, Steve Harley and Jon Martyn.

She still likes Jon Martyn, likes some classical, isn't bothered about Harley, but prefers Bluegrass and country, esp Alison Krauss.

DS liked relaxation music (eg surf sound with classical played over the top) - he still likes it on now at bedtime even though he's 3
He also likes rock music (Kings of Leon/Green Day/Blink 182 - sanitised radio versions of course)
Every time COldplay came on he burst into tears and still doesn't like them now

Elvis Presley.

Any type actually. Both dcs needed white noise as babies to fall asleep and stay asleep.
