prob is I hate the waily stuff, but I love Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, some of Dolly Parton, some early bluegrass stuff. Who else should I try?

The cross over album with Robert Plant and Allison Krauss is superb - as is Krauss with her band (Union Station?), but may be that is too blue grass to be considered pure country?

EffiePerine Fri 06-Jun-08 13:45:05

Alison Krauss

pretty sure I've heard her stuff and liked it

all women so far I see

DaDaDa Fri 06-Jun-08 13:48:27

Gram Parsons, Gene Clark, Byrds - Sweetheart Of The Rodeo, Townes Van Zandt.

MegBusset Fri 06-Jun-08 13:48:59

This is a v good compilation of alt.country stuff

EffiePerine Fri 06-Jun-08 13:49:46

I am prepared to cross anyone off the list if they wear a sparkly cowboy hat

EffiePerine Fri 06-Jun-08 13:51:09

ooh that looks good Meg

Spero Fri 06-Jun-08 13:51:53

The Be Good Tanyas are excellent, but maybe crossing over more to folk. Have you tried the Pandora website? If you tell it what you like, it will come up with loads of suggestions for stuff that is similar.

EffiePerine Fri 06-Jun-08 13:52:04

DH is going to hate ALL of this

<scribbles industriously>

he has been assaulting my ears with Max Raabe so deserves it

EffiePerine Fri 06-Jun-08 13:52:33

Folk is good too

DaDaDa Fri 06-Jun-08 13:53:43

That does look good. I'll add that to my Christmas list!

Libra Fri 06-Jun-08 13:55:22

Lyle Lovett - funny, a great singer and songwriter, divorced from Julia Roberts. Who could want more?

sfxmum Fri 06-Jun-08 14:00:09

very fond of Gillian Welch

EffiePerine Fri 06-Jun-08 15:48:37

I like the Dixie Chicks, particularly from the home album Travellin' Soldier and Godspeed (sweet dreams) and top of the world and .... hmm Maybe I should just suggest the whole album and leave it at that. I think it might be one of my favourite ever.

AllFallDown Tue 15-Jul-08 10:13:47

Laura Cantrell - Not The Tremblin' Kind
The Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall

Kaliope Fri 18-Jul-08 19:14:29

I have a couple of suggestions if you're still watching this...

bright eyes - one of my favourites! Probably more alternative/folky. Emmylou Harris did some backing vocals on one of their albums "I'm wide Awake It's Morning".

Also Dan Brodie - starts quite slow, you have to persevere for the first minute or so.
