K-pop anyone?

I know there’s a thread on Korean drama (I’ve not joined as I haven’t watched any yet!) so maybe there are some k-pop fans lurking on here?! Or maybe I missed a thread?

I don’t think I could really choose a favourite group but I’m probably listening to a couple of N.Flying, Day6 and Pentagon songs most at the moment.

It’s not k-pop per se but on Spotify there’s a playlist called “Japanese City Pop” and the entire family has it on all the time. 80s hits from Japan are so wonderful and such an escape!

Bit late to the party here but as my username attests, I’m a big Kpop fan - particularly Super Junior

DD is really into anything Korean. She loves BTS, and a girl band that I don't remember the name of. She is also realy into Korean food and cooks it really well. We had a fabulous Korean meal in a Korean restaurant in Newcastle the other week. It must have been good because most of the clientele looked Korean.

No one's ever clocked my username as a k-pop reference.

I'm into the whole group, not just the soloist behind the song!

I wonder if there would be more response now? Kpop seems to be hitting the public consciousness over the last couple of years (ta to BTS). For me DD's been a fan since about 2016, and spent a large amount of time persuading me to the dark side. I love the music but more I love all the fan interaction around it - the variety shows, the social media, etc. It gives me the same sense of excitement that I had as a teen in the 80's. All the indie/alt rock/whatever bands I like rarely do anything but put out music every 2 or 3 years, I'm greedy I want more than that. No music shows, no interesting music magazines any more.

My main loves are ATEEZ (just seen at Wembley) BTS (yeah, yeah) and A.C.E (babies doing military service) but I'm open to a lot. Looking forward to Southwark Park in London hosting a Kpop festival - one of DD's favs playing so we're definitely going.

(and it's funny, first started posting on MN due to Buffy in 2003. Can Kpop drag me back from just casual thread name reading in 2022?)

This is so embarrassing - I normally like rock and indie - but me and dd2 often listen to an audible story in bed on Alexa or relaxing music. One night we asked for k pop to see what the fuss was about. We both quite like it. I have no idea what bands we listen to but the Alexa music channels tend to play the same music every night and dd2 likes the repetition as she has autism. So we go to sleep listening to k pop. My older daughter sneers at us.

Hello @Fairy36 I am the OP, I had in fact forgotten I started this - not using MN much these days.

@MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic I also saw Ateez at Wembley, what a show that was!!! My first Kpop concert, absolutely loved it. What are your favourites by them? I have many on repeat but for me it’s probably Still Here or Answer if I’m wanting something emotional, or The Real if I am in a shouty-music sort of mood 😁

@user9513574682 We're definitely going. We had tickets for the cancelled one day event that was supposed to be on 20/11 so apparently we can get presell for next years 3 day show.

@CurseYouPerryThePlatypus I'm a big fan of The Real. Loved it when they did it as part of Kingdom, so was so happy when they released it properly with Mingi. Plus, bloody brilliant MV. I liked their noisier stuff first then got into the ballads - tbh, that's how DD weaned me onto BTS, played me rapline (Cyphers, Mic Drop, Hobi and Agust D) and then the rest followed.
First Kpop concert was just before Lockdown, we went to see Day6 play Brixton, I originally bought the ATEEZ tickets beginning of 2020 for March that year! Didn't think it would then take over 2 years to finally see them! We saw Eric Nam at the Forum this year too, plus the MIK festival at Southwark Park. After not doing live concerts for a few years we've gone a bit ticket mad.

Just started getting into K-pop. The kids had a PSY phase and eventually YouTube started throwing up other artists. Really getting into BigBang- I was also a rock/metal/indie fan when growing up but I love their edgy songs and style!

I’ve joined the K-pop help subreddit to get ideas for more artists and so far listened to a bit of Seventeen, Treasure, BTS etc. I will check out Ateez.

It’s a bit of an underrated genre in the UK. I don’t think the UK has much of a music scene at the moment so I wonder if K-Pop might start gaining in popularity here?
