Interestingly, he didn't smooch anyone in the audience when I went and in fact gave a little speech about how we wouldn't be kissing any ladies because his lady friend said it made her uncomfortable.

I grew up listening to all of his hits - my mum was seriously the biggest fan ever! - and have wanted to go and see him for ages. last time he was touring, we couldn't get a babysitter for dd1.

this time, I'd have left them with any passing random person

the woman he kissed got a bit excited, and security had to stop her form constantly hanging about the edge of the stage, so he probably got a bit worried about stalkers

When I went to uni I nicked my mother's Neil Diamond collection. Cos' he makes a "Beautiful noise" ( did you see what I did there?). I obviously hid it in my cool indie collection of music until terribly drunk and wanted to show off my muscial talents singing " Forever in Blue Jeans.." Ermmmmm....

Actually, silverfrog, before I started this thread I searched MN for references to Mr Diamond, to see whether I was going to be ridiculed or made to hand back my MN membership card. It seems there are some other devotees here, so I'm hoping to lure them out of hiding.

My mum is/was also a fan - that's where I also got my enthusiasm for Messrs Sinatra and Manilow.

Three and counting! Yes, there is a timbre to his voice that I think is unique. He does indeed make a beautiful noise. And maybe it does just confirm Noel Coward's line about the potency of cheap music, but I like the fact that he sings about the trials and tribulations of the human experience. The songs seem a bit more grown up than most contemporary disposable pop.

Silverfrog - I thought I had explained. Like others here, I grew up listening to my dear mater's collection of Neil Diamond records (although I think she was a fairly late recruit at about the Jazz Singer stage). I also had a friend who thought that the cover of Hot August Night was the most thrillingly rude thing she'd ever seen. I have always liked the songs but he wasn't part of my musical pantheon. Whereas now - having gone to the concert because my mater was unwell - and have the t-shirt and tea towel to prove it.
