Have you had the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine in the last 6 weeks?

We’ve been asked by the Drug Safety Research Unit to find Mumsnet users who have had the first dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in the last 6 weeks to take part in a project to monitor the effects of the vaccine. You can take part whether or not you’ve experienced any symptoms following the vaccine

Below you’ll find some information on the project from Dr Liz Lynn, Head of Scientific and Educational Development, Drug Safety Research Unit:

“Hi, I’m Liz, and I’m from an organisation called the Drug Safety Research Unit (DSRU). We’re an independent academic unit and registered charity, established in 1981 and based in Southampton. Whilst all medicines are subject to thorough testing for efficacy and safety before being made available, continued monitoring to gather information in ‘real life’ is always essential too. That’s where we come in.

We’re currently working on a project to monitor the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. This study is supported by a consortium of doctors, pharmacists and scientists from 12 UK universities and NHS trusts. Data collected will be shared with the manufacturer, the UK’s regulating body, and the results will be publicly available too.

For the study, we’re asking anyone who has had their first dose of this vaccine within the last 6 weeks to sign up to this questionnaire-based study. The initial sign-up phase takes around 10 mins, and participants will then be contacted via chosen method (text, email or phone) for a few follow-up questions over the course of the next 18 months. Of course, opting out at any stage is possible.

People have stepped up to volunteer in so many ways during the course of the pandemic, but the fight continues and ongoing research is a vital part of this. We’ve been grateful to the thousands who have already signed up over the last few months but we need more! In total we’re looking for 20,000 UK volunteers to help us with the trial, before their short 6 week window has passed. Please help by signing up, or sharing with others who you know fit this description. You can sign up and find more information available here.

Thank you for playing your part!”

Please note this project is not being run by Mumsnet, and if you sign up you will be sharing your details with DSRU.

Thanks
MNHQ

That's funny, I signed up with DRSU but they didn't get my forms & I don't know what to do in response to their texts.

They’re a long standing, internationally renowned organisation. What are you suspicious of?

I had the 1st dose two days before they said that under 40s would get an alternative. I was 40 at the time.

I was reluctant.

I had a mild hangover feeling for 24 hours then fine.

I've signed up but I wasn't sure who was the funder?? And why you're recruiting by self-selecting sample??

The only people saying is the dsru is internationally renowned is the org themselves.

Ha ha, fair enough! I’ve never heard anything bad about them but I’m obviously misinformed Grin

Even though they aren't internationally renowned it doesn't mean there is anything wrong with them.

There is an NHS website for people willing to participate in vaccine research. It is here:

@Aalvarino their participant information sheet says the study is funded by the vaccine manufacturer (i.e. AstraZeneca).

Slightly terrifying to have the option to nominate a contact so that if you kick the bucket they get to find out about it. Grin

I don't necessarily have a problem with the study being funded by AZ but it would be better to have that up front. Personally I suspect that all the (other) profit making vaccines will turn up undesirable effects amongst a tiny minority of people, too and I can absolutely see why AZ need to do a PR job here as they have done badly on that score.

On the other hand... Why plough money into a self-report study... I mean, no-one will take that seriously...

Hmm, they're asking for my GPs details incase I report a symptom for which further information is required. Hmm

I had really bad side effects for weeks after the AZ vaccine, but my first dose was in Feb, so too long ago to take part in this. The vaccinator at my 2nd dose argued with me about the side effects as well, but I know others have had similar. (And I was happy to be vaccinated and get the second dose too, the effects are outweighed by the benefits. Don't see the point in denying that some people can have significant side effects though)

@JulesJules
They don’t do themselves any favours by arguing with patients about side effects. This kind of behaviour of vax companies and medics just fuells anti vaxxers.

Hope you didn’t have a bad time 2nd time round

Not a chance you’re gp would respond
And it speaks volumes about the study that they even ask the question that they are ignorant of GDPR

Many organisations ask your permission to get info from your GP.I don't see anything odd in this!

Agreed
But they’re not asking for permission
They’re just asking for details as far as I know from the op
