Phew, that was a bit time consuming Grin hope I win.

It's not time consuming. I think there are many people clueless to how advertisers target us online. Penguin bollards anyone?

Targetted advertising fails dismally with me. I either scroll straight past or actively boycott the item/brand if it's a repeat offender.
I no more buy through online advertising than I do from door-to-door salesmen.

Also not a fan of adverts following me around. Just because I've shown an interest in something it doesn't mean I want to be pestered about it when I've moved on

I'm always rather amused by the "targeted" ads for the naff M&S products that have been the subject of MN threads!

Agree, PickAChew. If it messes with their data, that's great!

I don't like it when I've helped DD search for stuff for her college course and then get bombarded by ads for stuff I really have no interest in whatsoever!

Report
tinyterrors · 11/04/2017 22:11

I hate being bombarded by adverts about something I've briefly looked at, usually thing on threads on mn, especially as there's no way to turn them off.

I'd be a lot happier about targeted adverts if there was a way to edit the data to remove adverts for things I'm not interested in but may have looked at for a reason, one example is penguin bollards. Adverts for those followed me around the net for years after searching them when reading the mn thread.

Really cross about this, need a sane outside perspective! am v sleep deprived this morning so could be overreacting and being unreasonable...

My Dh has a really bad habit of leaving used dental floss and used contact lenses all over the place ( on radiators, bedside table, floor etc.) and never putting them in bin. I always have to do it for him. Totally gross imo, especially if I tread on a soggy contact lens or have to pick a dry one off the table. have asked him not to do this on so many occasions.

This morning he left used dental floss draped over the back of the loo. I put in loo and told him about it. Was about to flush, when he marched in and said he'd left it there deliberately so he could put it in bin later as not good to flush it (when was he going to do it?! Bin is just in next room) then made me remove said floss from toilet with hand and put on bathroom floor so he would put in bin later. Am so p*ed off that he thinks it's ok to tell me to do that but won't have courtesy of putting it in the flipping bin when he already knows how much I hate it! Yuk!

Ok I know it's just a small thing and I'm probably overreacting but ARGHHHH!

Rant over, feeling bit Better now.

What are the really annoying minor things that your OH does that drive you mad?

One thing I've noticed is I'll research something... say for some reason I want to know how fast mobility scooters go. Then afterwards I'll get heaps of ads for the sodding mob-scooters. Hilarious. I never wanted to buy one & possibly never will.

Report
ipswichwitch · 14/04/2017 10:36

Done. I'm not keen on targeted advertising. Me and DH share an iPad and the last thing I want is for ads to pop up for products that are intended for a birthday present!

I dunno... if not targeted advertising then what would I get? Ads for weight loss programmes, Hello magazine, handbags & fake news stories about celebrities? Those ads are what many websites are overwhelmed with (all dreadful & irrelevant to me).

What I don't like about targetted advertising, and predictive search come to that, is that they both narrow your horizons. Without them, you may find that there are things you didn't even know existed but which are really really interesting. As it is, with predictive searches, I get what is deemed by an algorithm to be more or less what I want with few side trips, and with targetted adverts I just see lots of thing very like lots of thing I've already seen.

I want my horizons to expand.
