As part our Family Friendly programme, we want to find out a bit more about Mumsnet users’ experiences (or not) of flexible working.

By ‘flexible working’ we mean any working pattern that is different from the norm and aims to accommodate employees’ needs. This could be a job share, or an agreement that you can work from home on certain days, or working a combination of long and short days, or compressed days - and probably lots of other combinations.

This survey is open to all Mumsnetters in the UK who are employed, or have been employed in the past.

Everyone who takes part and adds their details at the end will be entered into a prize draw to win a £50 voucher (for the store of choice, from a list).

There seems to be an assumption that all women will be delighted to trade pay & promotion for part-time or flexible working. I don't want to be the "budget option", and I doubt I'm the only woman to be promoted after going part time.

I realise there are many bad employers out there but there didn't seem much option to tick if you work for a decent one.

Done. Was turned down for flexible working by my misery guts employer. It's alright for senior management though ..

Done. I work full time but flexibly. I can work from home on a regular but ad hoc basis. (No fixed work from home day but I do it at least once a week). I have a long commute of 1 hour one way outside of rush hour. I travel outside of rush hour by getting in the office by 8 and leaving by 3, unless I have something I must attend in the office. It enables me to continue with the job and be there for my children.

Meglet - I thought that question about whether anyone senior works flexibly was difficult to answer - even in the least flexible places I've worked senior management has been able to make decisions about their working day that weren't available to ordinary employees. I'm not sure how much it means when senior managers come in late every Friday to do the school run, if nobody else gets to IYSWIM?

I might have missed something as I can't go back into the survey to check, but i don't think you're going to get many answers to question 11, since you ask anyone who doesn't work flexibly to close the survey back in question 1. You'll still have some people that used to work flexibly but no longer do, but that's about it.

Flexible hours is very important to me... I'm sure I pay for it though in terms of salary, though, not high in my type of role in my industry.

Done. I left my last job after they refused my flexible working request for the second time. I was willing to bend over back wards for them. Now much happier in a new job which is part time and job share and I get to see my boys much more.

I started the survey but found it frustrating as there was nowhere to explain the limitations of flexible working in my profession: that although it is possible to do part time in terms of the days (e.g 2/3/4 days instead of the standard 5) you can't ever do short days or take TOIL and holidays/leave are totally set in stone. I ended up abandoning the survey because I couldn't answer truthfully.

Done. I work in a very traditional male-dominated industry where working from home and flexible working is almost unheard of. I'm one of only a handful of people who had my request granted. 99% of requests are turned down.

I'm so fortunate and thankful to work for an employee who offers flexible working across the entire workforce and has done for many many years; it makes work/life balance so much easier.
