Just a quick question, before I download do I need to remove any of the anti virus I have I have a free avast programme.

cheryl59 Tue 24-Mar-09 14:58:19

I was going to ask the same question ! I currently have the 7.5 version of AVG installed so I was wondering if I can just update it or whether I have to totally uninstall the old version before reinstalling the new version wink

ShrinkingViolet Tue 24-Mar-09 15:06:14

cheryl59 - the new AVG will automatically uninstall any previous versions as it loads (just done mine).

jochrisbryan Tue 24-Mar-09 16:02:15

*What you dont get with AVG 8.5*
Protection against identity theft, hacker attacks, infected downloads, infected instant-messaging and spam

It says this on the page so we may not be able to comment on the less spam question, but I will wait and see if it lessens. {wink}

No, you don't have to uninstall AVG 7.5 - the new version will do it for you.

1. How concerned are you about online security, spam and viruses?
- not so concerned- concerned or - very concerned

Very concerned as I work in IT support in a school.

2. To your knowledge, have you ever been the victim of a computer virus, online data theft or credit/debit card fraud?

Not personally, though I have had to help several friends who have

3. On average, how many hours per week do your children spend on the internet?
- under 1 hour
- 2 ? 4 hours
- 4 ? 6 hours
- 6 ? 10 hours
- More than 10 (if so how many hours)?

My children are now grown up, so I don't know exactly but well over 10 hours

4. Did you find downloading AVG 8.5 to be easy?

Yes, but see note below

5. Did you notice any changes to how much spam came through?

Not a lot

6. How many ?bad sites? did AVG 8.5 pick up on a daily basis?

Haven't seen any, but I don't tend to visit potentially dodgy sites

7. Would you recommend it to your friends?

Yes (have done so)

8. Would you pay for this product?

Not for this version, but posibly for the more advanced one

Note on downloading:
I downloaded with no problems a while ago, but I was downloading it to a friend's laptop yesterday and got a corrupt file report (I think the version filename ended 1450) I tried two or three times with the same result.
Luckily I still had the previous version (filename ended 1439) on my USB drive, so I installed that & updated & it's fine.

KingCanuteIAm Tue 24-Mar-09 16:31:24

The 'file is corrupt message' is what I was getting yesterday trying to install the latest version on an laptop running XP(filename avgfree_stf_en85-283a1450 downloaded from Computeractive's vnunet)
I had an earlier version saved & that worked - that was avgfree_stf_en85-278a1439

RustyBear Tue 24-Mar-09 20:42:40

Hmm, the underlining thing rather buggered that up - should read
avg free stf en85 283a1450 and
avg free stf en85 278a1439
with _ where the spaces are

LackaDAISYcal Tue 24-Mar-09 20:53:19

One thing though, we are meant to comment on spam etc and there is a question about identity theft, but the free version doesn't include spam, identity theft or even a firewall. I would have thought that if they wanted feedback then we should be testing the full thing?

And also, if there is no firewall included does that mean by removing my existing software (as requested in the download process!) I'm now not fully protected.

Or am I just being a techno-idiot? grin
