This is the feedback thread for the 200 Mumsnet users who have been testing Klearvol essential oil inhalation capsules. This product test was open to all MNers with at least one child aged over 3 months to 12 years old.

I just squeezed the capsule contents onto a muslin and placed it next to the bed, very quick and easy.

Used when my daughter complained of a stuffy nose at bedtime. These ailments always seem worse at night. We would probably use these at least once a month over the winter months.

We really liked them, they seemed to have a good effect and I think just the ritual of using one was soothing for my daughter as well.

We used them at bedtime. I can see us using them frequently as DS often has a blocked nose.

I thought they were great. I remember my mum using Karvol capsules with me when I was young. We have been using Baby oblasoil but I find that can be a bit overpowering. The capsules were easy to use and having a regulated amount reduced the risk of using too much.

I'm not sure what is meant by soothing. It's a bit of a vague term, so it's hard to tell. Is it supposed to soothe a bad mood, make wide awake children fall asleep, soothe sore chests/throats/nasal passages due to cold or allergies or maybe something I've missed? I can't say I noticed any particular change in them.

This product test couldn't have come at a better time! My husband and two children all had colds and were bunged up. I put one capsule on a tissue for each of the children and tucked it behind their pillow at night. These do work but no better than Olbas oil (which is cheaper)
I actually used to use these in my job (flight attendant) for children who's ears were painful during a flight. I'd squeeze one capsule onto a tissue and place said tissue at the bottom of a plastic cup and the child would hold the cup over their nose. It worked a treat! I'd always carry these in my kit. For the adults, if you're interested, I used to give two pieces of that disgusting tasting Vicks vapour chewing gum, also works a treat!
Anyway, what I liked about these is the ease of carrying them about. I think they are rather expensive though. I'd only buy these to take on holiday or when travelling with children. Otherwise I just use BP crystals (so cheap from any pharmacy) or Olbas Oil.

Nice smell but didn't find it lasted the night. Liked the small packaging and that it was easily portable (if staying somewhere etc). Was concerned if found by a small child they might think it was a sweet.

Used it at bedtime as my 1 year old has a cold. I have 2 children under 5 years old so I get through lots of cold relief products usually each year.

Smelt nice, not too strong. I didn't like the capsules though because they can only be opened using scissors. I'd prefer a bottle of drops, like olbas oil, or a capsule that you can tear open. The price was reasonable in comparison to Calpol vapour plugins but more expensive than a bottle of olbas oil.

I liked the scent and that it didn't make my eyes water. It was a gentle vapour.

Yes it didn't smell synthetic or too strong but the vapours spread round the room (in fact the whole upper floor!) quickly.

I thought they were easy to use but didn't have a lot in the capsules as they were vet small. The smell is very similar to other menthol products we usually use.

Used them over the past 2 nightsd (to treat the inevitable back to school colds that kids have come down with). Given the germ factories that schools are, I imagine we will be using regularly through winter.

Used at bedtime when my children had a cold. My one son is susceptible to colds and he really struggles at night do would probably use several times during the winter months for approximately 5-7 days at a time (depending on the severity of the cold)

Worked well, although used at the end of my children's cold am keen to see how it helps at start of the cold. I like idea of being given a measured dose, however disliked the plastic capsules and would not buy them when I can get an alternative in a glass bottle.

The smell reminded me of the oil we had when I was a child. So no problems there. Otherwise too much packaging for a couple of drops of oil, it would be cheaper and better for the environment to buy a bottle.

I would use it at the first sign of a sniffle or cold. I'd imagine I'd use it over the Autumn and Winter months most, so a few times a year.

I liked them. However, I found them quite strong, it was a little tricky storing the remaining liquid in an open capsule. Maybe a small glass bottle with a droplet top would be better? It would minimise the use of plastic and packaging and we are then able to use as much or as little as we want.

I used it before bed for my little one who has a cold at the moment. If I thought it was useful I'd probably use it all year round.

They were fine. The smell was strong at first but faded quickly. I also didn't love the smell compared with purer essential oils like eucalyptus or peppermint. The capsule was a bit fiddly and I didn't think it was particularly environmentally friendly.

3. I do think these are a little bit messy as I seemed to get the oil on my fingers whilst squeezing it out. would be better in a small bottle.
   
   
4. I really did like the smell of Klearvol inhalation capsules as the strength was just right and not to over powering, Some other product do seem to make my eyes sting when first using them.
