This is the feedback thread for the MNers who tested out the Tilda Kids Rice range with their kids. This product test was open to all UK MNers with at least one child aged 1-8.

Here’s what Tilda have to say:
“Perfect for children who are weaned and happily eating solid food, Tilda Kids is a delicious range of rice and vegetables that have been especially developed with younger palates in mind. Every pouch is bursting with yummy, natural ingredients and hidden veggies meaning every pack counts as 1 of your child’s 5-a-day! The entire range of five variants is gluten-free and vegetarian, with four variants also dairy-free and suitable for vegans. Delicious on their own or with chicken, fish, meatballs or more vegetables, Tilda Kids not only makes meal-times easy – but delicious and healthy too! What’s more, they are ready in only 40 seconds in the microwave or just 3 minutes in a pan. The perfect cupboard essential for busy parents!”

Testers please answer the following question:

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?
  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?
  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?
  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?
  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

All selected testers will be required to leave feedback on what they thought of the Tilda Kids Rice range both on a thread on Mumsnet and by filling out a short survey. Everyone who completes both sets of feedback will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw.

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

my DC most preferred the paella rice - nice bright colours and seemed something different

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

Easy to serve, quick to cook, very convenient way of adding rice to a meal without having to "cook it properly"

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

Lunch and dinners, salmon and prawns.

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

I would dry the dry rice snacks, and see if they are good for on the go

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Probably not - as I don't think they're needed per say - the everyday "adult" tilda pouches work equally fine for convenience, taste and speed.

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

We enjoyed the sunshine version most. The cheesy tomatoe smelled great but did not taste as nice.

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

Microwavable! Genius! I’m terrible at cooking rice so this is such a fab way to quickly (and without washing up) to prepare rice.

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

Usually this is a dinner thing rather than a lunchtime food for us.

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

We tried the microwave basmati rice which was great. Also the lemon one which was good with fish. Picked up a wholegrain version which was also good - as was the quinoa. These suit my kids better than the toddler version.

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Probably not but we’ll continue to buy the plain rice (for anyone)

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

My DS enjoyed the sunshine version the most although all were wholeheartedly enjoyed

The convenience and ease of heating and cooking these. The packaging was colourful and looked a good quality as well.

Lunch and dinner and was served with a mix of vegetables, chicken and prawns in differing amounts and mixes.

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

Yes we already use Tilda rice and will continue to do so.

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

Perhaps as a cupboard back up however I dont know why I would use the kids over the normal version I already buy and use

hich Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

The whole grain with vegetables was sort of well received by my 4 year old, and the cheese and tomato. The two year old, normally a rice fan, didn't like any of them

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

Very convenient.

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

Lunch, on its own. Dinner with some bacon.

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

No

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

No. My kids didn't really like them, I suspect because they were quite bland in comparison to the egg fried rice I make them.

Jamhandprints · 29/08/2019 12:24

The Handprint children loved these rice packets.
They couldn't decide on a favourite, Vegetable hater DS7 loved the paella, but then loved the wholegrain even more. "Can I have this every day?"
Fussy eater DS5 loved the sunshine vegetable best. "Don't give my brother any."

We served the rice at dinner as a side dish to lemon chicken pita, but DD1 had them on their own for lunch and dinner or with a few pieces of chicken breast. She seems to love all the flavours.

  • We will buy Tilda Kids again for the baby, but probably not the boys as the packets are quite small. We will try the grown up versions though.

Thankyou Tilda!

Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

^Hate to say it but my toddler didn't really like any of them. She is a big fan of risotto and other rice dishes so I thought she would love these but she wasn't keen on them at all. I think it was the lack of flavour, a lot of the time they smelt great when cooking but the taste was quite lacking - I tried them myself as well.
T^oddler was really excited to try them, picked out which one she wanted and shouted yummy when she smelt it cooking, but spat it out saying yucky as soon as she tried it - sorry Tilda!

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

^
They are certainly quick and easy to prepare, which would be a great positive if they then enjoyed eating them.
^

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

We tried at both lunch and tea time, we tried on its own and alongside the rest of a meal. On its own it was completely rejected, alongside something else I managed to smuggle some bits in but the majority was left. It was mostly eaten when it was served alongside something else that had a sauce or gravy so I could mix that into the rice.

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

^
I probably wouldn't bother given her reaction to them. I also didn't really think they tasted that nice myself so I don't think I would feel too confident in the other products.

^

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

^
Nope. Looking at the price they are usually £1.15 from Tesco for 125g, compared to the 'normal' microwave rice which is 60p for 250g. I understand that they are marketed as one of the 'five a day' but that only works if the child will eat the whole portion and you aren't having to force it down. My toddler loves most vegetables so it's easier for me to just put those on her plate with the cheaper rice (which she will also eat.)^

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

Cheese and tomato (though did ask "Where's the cheese?")

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

The range of varieties (even though in practice they all contain similar veg and taste quite similar too). I liked the fact they were low in salt, but that did make them quite bland, and I think children can cope with stronger herbs and spices.

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

Dinner. Once with meatballs, once with chicken, sometimes on its own.

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

Possibly, but in general I find "pouch" rice very expensive compared with just cooking it from scratch.

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

I wouldn't buy it at the current price point. Also, on the packaging it said it was suitable from weaning, and it said that one packet was a portion size, but you surely wouldn't feed the whole packet to a newly-weaned baby, so it would be helpful to know what the target age is for whatever the intended portion is. I liked the fact that each packet contained a whole portion of veg, but I'd be inclined to think it's too much rice for a portion, so only if you overfed the rice would you be feeding enough veg.

Favourite flavour?
Sunshine veg was the biggest hit although he’s loved them all!

My favourite thing about them?
I love that it’s another of his 5 a day ticked off.

Which occasion did he eat the and what with?
He had them for dinner. We added salmon, chicken nuggets and veg (not all at once!).

Would I try other products?
Yes, they tasted good and were convenient.

Would I buy Tilda kids again?
Definitely. It’s great to have something I know he likes and that’s good for him in the cupboard for when I’m too lazy to cook.

  • Which Tilda Kids rice variant was your child’s favourite?

They liked the curry one, one didn’t mind the paella and the others were rejected as revolting.

  • What is your favourite thing about the Tilda Kids range?

Really quick to prepare

  • Which eating occasion (i.e lunch/dinner/snack) did you serve Tilda Kids, and what did you serve it with?

Dinner. Although most became a snack as I had to cook another meal to replace. The curry one was with a curry, which probably explains why it was eaten. The others were with fish or chicken but no sauce (and even ketchup couldn’t rescue them!)

  • Having tried Tilda Kids products, would you like to try other Tilda - microwave or dry rice products, outside of the kids range?

I’ve used the adult rice pouches before, but found them a bit strange with an oily coating.

  • Would you buy Tilda Kids again?

No. They were completely tasteless and mushy. At ages 6 & 9 they are definitely aimed at younger children. It’s a shame because I really wanted to like them as an easy thing to cook between school and clubs but it isn’t to be!
I definitely agree that children can take much stronger flavours- I would struggle to differentiate most of them on taste and the cheese and tomato one was particularly disappointing and bland.

My kids didn't like these. They were stodgy and gloopy with too many small pieces of "unidentifiable vegetables!". This was my 7 year olds opinion. We have a rice cooker and so are used to perfectly cooked rice and he was not impressed by these. The curry flavour has the best taste but the texture just wasn't right. They are convenient but pricey for the size of packet. I served it as a side with dinner but would not but again and it has not left me confident to try other products from Tilda.
