This is the feedback thread for those 30 MNers who tested the Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablet.

Here’s what Amazon has to say about the product: “Fire Kids Edition tablets are built around three ideas: 1) kids break things, 2) kids want real tablets, not a toy, and 3) parents don’t want to worry about the bill. Each full-featured tablet comes with a kid-friendly case, and a 2-year worry free guarantee—if they break it, we’ll replace it, no questions asked. The device also comes with a year subscription to Fire for Kids Unlimited for unlimited access to thousands of kid-friendly books, movies, TV shows, educational apps, and games, and best-in-class parental controls to manage usage limits, content access and help set educational goals.”

Testers, please answer the questions below:

  • What does your child think about of the Fire Kids Edition tablet? Did they enjoy using it?
  • What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)?
  • How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?
  • Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing?
  • What did you think about the Parent Dashboard?

Non-testers, what parental control features would be most important to you in a child’s tablet?

Non tester- biggest thing I’d like to control is access to the internet / parental controls on what is visible. It is incredibly scary how easily accessible the full force of the internet is to anyone these days

Non tester. 100% being able to control what our children see and can download. There has been way too much lately of kids being exposed to indecent content.

  • What does your child think about of the Fire Kids Edition tablet? Did they enjoy using it?

They love using it. They are really excited to have the freedom to be able to use it themselves without me panicking about them accessing something they shouldn't or breaking it!

  • What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)?

This is incredible. I'm much more inclined to let them do what they want with it. I'm not worrying about them dropping it or breaking it. The case is so sturdy I find it unlikely that they will break it, but if they do I know it's got a guarantee anyway.

  • How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?

The parental controls are great. I love that they need the passcode to use my account or to access new internet networks, buy apps or change any settings. They are very easy to use - I'm not one for reading instructions but was able to set it up intuitively.

  • Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing?

They are delighted with the content available. In fact, there is so much on there that we haven't explored everything yet. Are there audio books on there? That's the next thing we will be looking for.

  • What did you think about the Parent Dashboard?

The parent dashboard is perfect. Easy to use and set up profiles for each of the children that are age appropriate. Both of mine fit into the younger age category but as they get older, we will change the settings to give them progressively more freedom.

  • What does your child think about of the Fire Kids Edition tablet? Did they enjoy using it?

Both my sons loved using it, the 7 year old is thrilled to bits to have a 'proper' tablet like we have. The 2 year old just wanted the 7 year olds to watch Fireman Sam so we have just purchased a second tablet. We could have used just one and swapped profiles (which was a great alternative) but after a recent birthday we used the money for the second one instead because it will certainly be used.

  • What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)?

This was without a doubt the biggest pull for me. Kids break stuff so knowing that I am worry free for the next 2 years is a genius move by Amazon. I am thrilled with the guarantee.

  • How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?

I must admit I worried about being able to work my round an android style tablet as I am normally an Apple girl, however it was really easy to set up and understand and i love that there is a pin needed so the kids cant get in and access anything they shouldn't.

I also like that you can limit timing and age levels of downloads allowed and that you can log in and see even from your amazon account what each device has on it.

  • Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing?

Both kids seem thrilled, obviously the little one because Sam is on there in TV programmes, apps and games. The 7 year old is slowly working his way through the entire library I think. Although he has about 20 apps he is loving and he obviously hasn't seen everything yet.

Just on a side note I would love to see more of a discount after the year is up on the Kids unlimited as it's a great price monthly for one device and amazing price for 3+ kids but for 2 kids it's the same as the 3+ devices option and it would be nice to see more of a discount for 2 kids :-) .. however that might just be me being a penny pincher.

  • What did you think about the Parent Dashboard?

The parent dashboard is great and i found it really easy to check content and usage and also download any films or anything extra that we purchased (if we wanted too) - We had some kids films already on my amazon account that i bought that i easily popped onto my eldest sons tablet to use too, but not the youngest as they were too old for him.

Overall I have found I love the freedom the device gives to allow me to protect the kids and limit what they have access too, without hindering their growth on the new digital devices.

Non tester but we have 3 of them. I can confirm that Amazon do indeed honour the 'no questions asked' replacement promise, as DS smashed his screen and we were sent a replacement.

  • What does your child think about of the Fire Kids Edition tablet? Did they enjoy using it?

My five-year-old loved the tablet. She picked up the user interface really quickly and was able to switch between videos, apps and books with out any problems.

  • What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)?

This is absolutely brilliant. My kids aren't delicate with anything, let along expensive tech. Hopefully we'll never have to use the guarantee but it removes a lot of worry knowing that there's a no quibble exchange if the worst does happen. The case is also robust and lightweight.

  • How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?

I've found it relatively simple to navigate from my daughter's profile back to the parental controls to set and adjust how long she can use the tablet and what targets she needs to achieve each day.

At the moment we're not really focussed on reading targets but I can see this working well for us as she becomes a more confident reader. The feature I like the most at the moment is being able to put a limit on screen time. It can be so easy for me to lose track of how much time is spent on tablets and TV. This is a handy reminder that it's time to do something active instead.

  • Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing?

Totally. At five-years-old there was so much choice for her. I can't see her getting bored of the content any time soon.

  • What did you think about the Parent Dashboard?

This was great. It integrates with our existing Amazon account giving us access to movies downloaded to our Amazon Fire TV and Stick.

  • What does your child think about of the Fire Kids Edition tablet? Did they enjoy using it?

My 6 year old absolutely loves it. She loves reading and so the fact that she is able to now read in bed without disturbing her sister has been a real plus. She also loves watching the videos and being able to access everything without me looking over her shoulder.

  • What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)?

The case is fab! It is so sturdy and her little brother already dropped it without any damage to the screen. I love that there is a no questions asked guarantee. Accidents happen and the fact that Amazon will give this promise means they have faith in their product.

  • How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?

I LOVE the parent controls! My favourite feature is the fact that you can set a daily goal for the child. I have set it so that she must do 30 minutes of reading before she can access anything else. I have also set the daily limit for video and games for 30 minutes but made reading unlimited.

  • Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing?

She loves the mix of books and she has happily played various games and watched different videos. They are easy to access and she is able to download them so she can take them with her on journeys - perfect for trips away.

  • What did you think about the Parent Dashboard?

I love that it syncs up with my account. We had already downloaded some movies into our account and I was able to give her access to them on her own account.

Everything is really easy to use and we want another one for our other daughter.

  • What does your child think about of the Fire Kids Edition tablet? Did they enjoy using it?

My son is eight and absolutely loves the Fire Kids Edition. He loves using it, and it happy to read books on it as well as play on the apps.

  • What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)?

I think this is fantastic. We all know that even though children can be careful, they do sometimes break things. The fact that if anything happens to it in the first two years, you know you are covered, really put my mind at ease.

  • How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?

I found the parental controls very intuitive and easy to use. My personal favourite features are the time limits that you can set, meaning that you know your child is not going to spend too much time on the tablet.

  • Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing?

My son was so impressed with all the content available. We downloaded some books straight away and he found all the football apps he could ever want to play on! I didn't feel there was anything missing, and I love that he has the control over what he downloads, without me worrying that it could be inappropriate.

  • What did you think about the Parent Dashboard?

I think it is brilliant that it links up to your Amazon account. It means that there is additional content available to him.

  1. Tiggy and her brothers too, absolutely love this and it’s become clear very quickly that I’m going to have to purchase more to stop them squabbling over who’s turn it is! They’ve all enjoyed playing on it.

  1. The protection package is brilliant as no doubt with them squabbling over this (see above) it’s only a matter of time before it gets dropped and broken although that said, the protective case appears quite substantial so hopefully it will withstand drops and bumps. Time will tell.

  1. The parental controls are ideal especially as the older children here were keen to download things they were more interested in and they had to ask permission each time for me to enter my code, so I could allow them to use it without my supervision safe in the knowledge they couldn’t download anything that wasn’t age appropriate.

  1. For Tiggy the content was ideal, it had everything she could possibly want, books, her favourite tv shows, she absolutely loved the animal jigsaw games and quickly learned to whizz through them. The older children here love national geographic and documentaries so wanted to download those but they’re educational so that was no problem and they were easy to access and download too.

  1. The Parent Dashboard is ideal as I can keep my content separate to that of Tiggy’s and vice versa I don’t have her content taking over my little area of the device. I also like that I can set time limits for its use and keep tabs on what she’s been viewing and of course what she can and can’t use.

Our overall verdict - it’s brilliant and the children here aged 2-8 have each enjoyed using it, so much so it’s only February and it’s already on the “Christmas lists” of Tiggy’s brothers! Smile

They loved having access to all their favourite TV shows and that they could spot their favourite characters by pictures. They also loved the games and really have enjoyed exploring the wealth of choice

  • What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)?

It has been dropped quite a few times and whilst m heart is in my mouth, it's been fine. I love that there's a 2 year guarantee as hopefully in two years they'll be less clumsy

  • How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?

Very easy to use and set up. I love that they can't purchase anything without me knowing which is always a worry a I've read some horror stories!

  • Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing?

The girls were really happy with the content - especially all the Peppa Pig stuff. They liked the books and games and just need to learn to share! However, it was harder to find suitable stuff for my 9 year old, but his life is all about YouTubers and XBoxes!!

  • What did you think about the Parent Dashboard?

Very handy. I like to be able to check their usage and what they've been looking at when I'm cooking tea. I like that I can link it with our Amazon account too.

Overall for the price, guarantee and amount of stuff available I am really impressed and think I may have to get another to stop the squabbling!

What does your child think of the Fire Kids Edition tablet? Did they enjoy using it?

My eleven-year-old absolutely loves his Fire Kids Edition tablet. On his first day with it he simply couldn’t believe all of the content which came with it as part of the Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription. In the past he has only seen tablets as a device for playing games, but he’s loving exploring books and music much more than ever before. This morning he wanted to play Chess rather than other games. He also enjoys using Alexa, especially when it tells him Star Wars jokes!

What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device?

The package gives really good peace of mind. The kid-friendly case is tough and light-weight and my son really likes the funky design on the back. We’ve had screens break on tablets in the past and it’s reassuring to know that this would be covered under the protection package.

How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?

The parental controls are some of the most intuitive and useful I have used. I really liked that the default setting is to only include content which doesn’t allow in-app purchases. Having an educational aspect to the tablet settings is also a really good idea, allowing games and apps to be a reward after reading for a set time. I thought it was a simple to use and effective feature.

Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing?

My son was delighted with all the content included, especially the books and music. Some of the content was better suited to younger users, but he was really happy with the apps, games and books which were aimed at his age group. Being able to test out games and find ones he liked under the subscription rather than having to make a purchase each time was good for him and me.

What did you think about the Parent Dashboard?

The Dashboard is well laid out for parents with lots of straight-forward and useful settings. It’s easy to set up bed times and when the tablet can be used in the morning and it’s also good to be able to limit usage of different aspects of the tablet, such as different times allowed for games and videos and books.

What does your child think about of the Fire Kids Edition tablet? Did they enjoy using it? She absolutely loves it. The bright yellow case is appealing and comfortable for her to hold. She found it easy to navigate the tablet and get it to do what she wanted.

  • What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)? It's awesome, like a kid proof insurance policy. My kids have always had "proper" tablets but there's an element of risk that comes with that and as such a broken screen is to be expected at some point. Watching my youngest place with her Fire Kids edition is a much more relaxing experience. I'm not panicking if I see her walking across the room carrying it.

  • Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing? She certainly hasn't complained - it has kept her really entertained.
  • What did you think about the Parent Dashboard? I found it really easy to navigate. I liked that whilst it's all linked to my amazon account, I'm still in complete control of which bits of my content the children can see etc. I had no concerns that they would actually purchase anything!

Non tester. I bought a kindle fire for my son so he could use the immersion reading function which is brilliant for less enthusiastic readers but :

  1. The immersion reading functionality is outside of the kindle for kids system. So to use it he has to have unlimited access to the internet which, for something intended as a reading tool for children, is a massive own goal. I’m quite cross about it actually.

  1. Buying the immersion reading books from Amazon is not intuitive at all. I’ve done it several times now and each time get stuck. Have had to call the helpline twice.

Otherwise he loves it.

What does your child think about of the Fire Kids Edition tablet? Did they enjoy using it?
My 6yo absolutely loves her Fire Kids Edition tablet. She loves that it’s a real tablet (not a toy) but is funny looking.

What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)?
The kids friendly case gives me real peace of mind - plus the night yellow is handy when you’re hunting for it in the house! The 2 year guarantee allows kids to be kids with the tablet and I don’t have to be hovering over her when she uses it.

How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?
I found the parental controls really easy to use, it wasn’t long after setting up that I found the dashboard intuitive and second nature. One of my favourite desires is that you make children ‘earn’ passive screen time by reading and completing educational activities.

Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing?
My daughter really enjoys the content that comes free for the first year and I feel reassured that it’s age appropriate and can be tailored/adjusted as they grow older.

What did you think about the Parent Dashboard?
The parent dashboard is a great one stop shop for your child’s digital use, plus the fact that it’s linked to my Amazon account is an added benefit for a more connected online family.

Watch out for the subscription. It's free for the first year but not listed under subscriptions on the tablet. So I didn't realise that I was still paying it - I forgot about it. Amazon have said that they will raise this internally because it looks like you have no subs but actually you do.

  • What does your child think about of the Fire Kids Edition tablet? Did they enjoy using it?

My 3 year old has really enjoyed using her Amazon Fire For Kids. Having her own to use was a really big deal and she has become very confident navigating it very quickly.

  • What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)?

The case for the tablet is brilliant. It makes the tablet easy for her to hold, and she loves the colour too. We had a yellow one. It's really durable, whilst not making the tablet too heavy to hold. There's also a good amount of depth with the case to protect the tablet screen.

The 2 year guarantee is excellent and gives us a huge piece of mind when giving a young child a tablet. The price point is excellent, but if something was to happen to it it's good to know that whatever happens you are guaranteed to have a tablet for them for 2 years. This is excellent value for money.

  • How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?

The parental controls are really easy to navigate and it only takes a few minutes to set up. My favourite feature is being able to set up controls that means the child needs to access educational apps first before watching videos or similar.

  • Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing?

The Kids Unlimited subscription is excellent and there's loads of choice. My daughter has access to apps and videos with her favourite characters which she loves, and we felt there was an excellent amount of choice.

They call it their “pad” and have enjoyed snuggling up together to watch different programmes and explore games together. They love that their child friendly interface has everything in one place and is easy to navigate, even for my youngest daughter.

  • What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)?

The case is already really sturdy so I naturally felt more at ease. Knowing that if they accidentally break it, which is probably likely, that Amazon will replace it with no questions is so reasasuring.

  • How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?

I didn’t research or read any instructions before beginning. It the Amazon Fire For Kids was really easy to set up initially and create different profiles for each member of our family. The only thing I did worry is that you have to add your payment details even for “free” apps.

  • What does your child think about of the Fire Kids Edition tablet? Did they enjoy using it?

I made my three youngest children their own profiles {which they loved}. Being almost 13, 9 & 5 they all have different interests. So they really liked being able to make their own profiles their own.

They also loved the wide range of apps, games & books available to them, too.

  • What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)?

The toughened kid-friendly case is a huge winner for me, as a parent. There is nothing worse than giving your child an expensive piece of technology & knowing full well the screen could be smashed by lunchtime. Kids will be kids, after all! However, with the protective case I can relax - then on top of the that, the 2yr guarantee is a huge winner for me also. Kudos to Amazon for that!

  • How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?

I found the parental controls easy to set up & use. I loved the default option to not allow in-app purchases - a big thing when the little ones use tablets. So knowing that I didn't need to worry about that either was amazing. I also love that you are asked for a pin before entering the parental controls - saves little fingers getting in to adjust anything!

My favourite feature, without a doubt, is being able to limit screen time. Also adding an age-appropriate content to the downloads available in each profile.

  • Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing?

My kids have loved everything available to them so far - there have been no complaints!

  • What did you think about the Parent Dashboard?

I really like it. Being able to keep track of everything on the tablet is so handy.

Overall, we love the tablet. The usage limits the content limitations also - all very reassuring. A great tablet all round.

What does your child think about of the Fire Kids Edition tablet? Did they enjoy using it?
My children have both really enjoyed using it and my 7 year old has returned almost every day to use his allotted time playing games and watching videos - the other is loving browsing books.

What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)? I think it's excellent. Real peace of mind for a parent who is handing over something expensive to a child. Ours has been dropped down the stairs and there are no hints that happened. If the worst happens then I know the replacement service is excellent as I've known 3 other parents use it in the past!

How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?
The parental controls are incredibly easy to use - just sliders and tickboxes. It took seconds to set both of my boys up with limits to times for activities (reading, watching, playing).

Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing?
My 9 year old thinks the videos and games are a bit young for him, but he's been happy reading books, so he's got as much out of it as his 7 year old brother, who has tried everything!

What did you think about the Parent Dashboard?
I was really impressed. There's no searching, no confusion, it's incredibly clear and easy to alter. Very intuitive and simple to use. You wonder why other apps and programmes can't just make it that easy.

I'm really impressed for the money. I can't think that any child 2-8 would need any other tablet or find a better suited one. My 7 year old has plenty of enthusiasm and has 'accidentally' broken no end of things. I feel really safe with the Fire For Kids.

Non-Tester = I'm another fan of wanting 100% control of what my five year old son can see/download on the Internet. There's some awful stuff 'hidden' on sites like YouTube, despite all of the parental controls being on.

  • What does your child think about of the Fire Kids Edition tablet? Did they enjoy using it?

My daughter loves the Fire Kids edition tablet and was instantly excited to get started as the bright case really appealed to her. She loves all the games and apps it comes with and how easy it is for her to navigate and use herself.

  • What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)?

The kid friendly case was perfect for us as my daughter is very clumsy so this gave me as apparent a big sense of relief. The same applied to the guarantee as this meant I could let her use the tablet without worrying that all my money would be wasted replacing it in the event of her breaking it!

  • How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?

I found the parental controls really easy to use and well explained. They seemed to cover everything I had concerns about and its great that I can set screen time limits from the get go rather than having to pull them off it unexpectedly which then causes upset.

  • Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing?

My daughter loves it! She still has apps and games to explore as there are so many included. All of the ones she has tried so far though have been great and really kept her engaged and interested.

  • What did you think about the Parent Dashboard?

I think its fantastic! Very easy to access and use and great that you can sink it up with your Amazon account.

They really like it, especially the access to the Amazon Kids content. Also the fact that the battery lasts for a decent amount of time and my youngest has even been reading on it, when usually he doesn't think to pick up a book and read other than for homework.

  • What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)?

The case is brilliant and one of the best I've ever seen for protecting a tablet. The colours that in comes in are great too, nice and bright. The 2 year worry guarantee is perfect especially if you have clumsy children like I do!

  • How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?

They were really easy to use and my favourite bit was the fact that children can't access the settings at all and the fact that you can have in app purchases turned off - that's an essential for any parent who doesn't want their bank account emptied out by accident.

  • Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing?

Yes, especially the book choices available for older children, they were exactly the sort of books to appeal to an 11 year old. The pre-loaded tv programmes were great too and a lot of the ones featuring Batman were watched when my youngest was home ill from school.

  • What did you think about the Parent Dashboard?

It's really handy for keeping an eye on what my son is using the tablet for and I love that there are separate profiles for everyone who uses the tablet including myself - when I can get a look in that is!
