This is the feedback thread for the 500 Mumsnetters who have been testing brand new range of cold-pressed baby food, My First Savsé.

My son loved the blueberry and the coconut one. Unfortunately, as you'll see on the other thread, they really disagreed with him, and he was very unwell during the night following eating these pouches. He had very loose nappies, and had what I assume were cramps, as he was screaming most the night, which is not like him at all.
3.How could My First Savsé improve their recipes?How would you say My First Savsé compares to the current offering of baby food pouches in supermarkets?
They could have more savoury options, however, didn't feel they were much different to what is already available.
4.Knowing that My First Savsé is never heat pasteurised, would you purchase My First Savsé if it was widely available in supermarkets, and why? No, due to my son's reaction to them. To know I fed him something that caused him so much pain, is something I won't be doing again.
5.Would you recommend My First Savsé baby food to a friend or family member, and why? I won't be recommending these due to ds's reaction, and also Savse's response to the whole testing. There were problems throughout, and I felt that Savse did not take our concerns seriously, and at times were trying to blame our 'sensitive babies' This product is the only thing that my ds has ever reacted to while weaning.

Although my son enjoyed the pouches they all seemed similar in that they contained lots of apple. Maybe meaty options if possible? They seem similar to other availability but the freshness is obvious.

Unfortunately my son reacted quite badly to the food, he had stomach cramps, severe wind, sleepless nights and occasional vomiting. Based on this I wouldn't purchase these products, but that's my personal experience, I wouldn't attempt to put another parent off.

1. Would you recommend My First Savsé baby food to a friend or family member, and why?

I believe that the concentration of fruit, veg and fibre was affecting my sons tummy. I would be happy to recommend as an occasional food, not a daily lunch treat, but that's based on my baby. I am, however, disappointed at how our concerns were handled during the test by My First Savsé.

I didn't know that chilled pet food was available, and I guess I would have assumed chilled baby food wasn't available. It won't, however, change the way I shop for my 'little one' - we just feed her what we have.

My 'little one's' favourite - well, the first one she didn't spit out - was the cacoa and whatever it was one.

3. How could My First Savsé improve their recipes? How would you say My First Savsé compares to the current offering of baby food pouches in supermarkets?

Recipes could be improved by not adding so much apple - every pouch you sent us had apple as the main ingredient, even if it wasn't the first listed on your 'interesting' sounding range of flavours.

I would say it doesn't really compare to other pouches - one because it's 'made different' but also because the flavours are just a bit bizarre.

4. Knowing that My First Savsé is never heat pasteurised, would you purchase My First Savsé if it was widely available in supermarkets, and why?

No, I wouldn't buy it. It was nice to be able to try it, but we don't buy baby food ordinarily, and certainly not pouches as they're not environmentally friendly. ALSO, at £1.70 per pouch in your lowest priced stockist (Morrisons) it's RIDICULOUSLY expensive - especially as it's essentially apple with added extras!

5. Would you recommend My First Savsé baby food to a friend or family member, and why?

No. Sorry. Why? See reasons above. Also not a fan of the twee, pretentious marketing style - 'little one', 'made different'. And also even if it's made different it still has a long shelf life, so I'm suspicious of the claims of freshness. Also one of the pouches at least had a 'six hours open' limit on it - wasteful for a first weaning food. Also the packaging isn't totally clear that the food should be kept refrigerated. And also the shocking shambolic way the trial has been conducted. Yes, okay, mistakes are made but sending out of date food to testers is not good! And dismissing testers concerns is also not good!

No I did not know this, but it's unlikely to change the way I shop. This is because non chilled food is more practical in terms of storage and taking out on trips etc.

My daughter is 10 months old and well established on solids. For her, the pouches were too runny. They tasted great though and she liked them. The flavour combinations may be too adventurous for younger babies.
Compared to other brands the range of flavours (as given in the test) is limited.


4. Knowing that My First Savsé is never heat pasteurised, would you purchase My First Savsé if it was widely available in supermarkets, and why?
I don't get the fuss about the heat pasteurisation thing to be honest. Apart from being what My First Savse are using as a way to distinguish themselves from other brands. I'm not sure I'd buy the pouches, sorry. This is because they are too runny, and I am now wary of them because of the issues others have had with their children having stomach problems. I'd like to add that my daughter was fine with them, but I'd be lying if I said this hadn't put me off buying the pouches.


5. Would you recommend My First Savsé baby food to a friend or family member, and why?
If totally based on my daughters experience, yes, as she liked them. But in reality I wouldn't recommend them because so many others' children had stomach issues. I'd feel terrible if I'd recommended a product that made a baby unwell.

No I wasn't aware. It won't change the way I shop because the whole point of using pouches is the convenience - I keep one in the change bag so it's there if I need it. As these need to stay chilled, it takes away the convenience of pouches and means I'd have to remember to take it out the fridge before I leave the house, and I have enough to think about!

She seemed ok with all of them, except lentils which she didn't try as it was out of date. I was told I'd receive a replacement but I didn't.

Pretty much the same as other brands really, I don't think my first Savsé are offering anything new or different.

No. As I've said above, chilled pouches are very inconvenient. I just make my own purées at home, it hardly takes any time.

No. Aside from the inconvenience of chilled pouches, they made my baby ill with an upset stomach. She has no allergies and doesn't have a sensitive tummy.

I wasn't aware, though I have recently been buying the Little Go Go Dish ones which are similar but obviously meals so a
bit bigger. I don't think it will have an effect on the way I shop as im not overly bothered about processed food, but I was intrigued as to how the pouches would be produced.

Definitely the Blueberry, Plum and Prune one. She was a huge fan and we've bought three more since. She also liked the coconut and cacao one but I found her a bit windier after it. She really didn't like the pear and pea one though!

1. How could My First Savsé improve their recipes? How would you say My First Savsé compares to the current offering of baby food pouches in supermarkets?
   

Possibly look at more textured options for older babies as these were obviously first food type offerings for 4 months and up. The Little Go Go range of food is for one year olds. So something in between would be nice. I'm not sure if the process would allow for it though? My daughter much preferred the flavour of these to the normal Little Angels or Cow and Gate fruit mixes I normally get. It's obviously reflected in the price though unfortunately.

I liked this as a selling point and found it readily available and on offer in my local Morrison's. However £1.70 for a pouch of just fruit or vegetable purées is quite steep considering most competitors offer theirs for well under £1, so unfortunately I couldn't afford to purchase them often. I did buy them on offer however as my daughter loves them.

Yes, my 8 month old really liked the flavours available. She has severe constipation issues and these still didn't help so I have no concerns over stomach issues. They definitely seemed fresher than other offerings!

No, I didn't know chilled pet food was available! I didn't know there was no chilled baby food available either. This is unlikely to change the way we shop for our baby.

Some of the ingredient combinations were a bit random - my daughter didn't really like the one with kale for example. I'm also not a fan of adding fruit to vegetable combinations as I think it's not good to just give babies sweet flavours all the time! I think they compare as being just good as other pouches on the market, but having to store these pouches in the fridge may put some people off as other pouches can be kept in a changing bag for use when you're out and about.

It would depend on the price, but yes.

Possibly. If they were concerned about using pasteurised baby food then I would recommend it, but if they weren't I probably wouldn't bother. Going to a separate aisle to the rest of the baby products in the supermarket is another thing to remember to do - if you're doing a weekly shop, for example.

A lot of the pouches were very sweet and even the savoury pouches has a sweet undertone. My first savse could improve by producing more veg pouches or pouches with less fruit added/ more savoury taste, my first savse doesn't have as many options for veg as I prefer to feed my son less sweet food due to the sugars when broken down and there wasn't really the option with the pouches

I don't think I would due to the price. My son enjoyed the taste but they did cause him to have looser poos during the trial.

I'm not sure I would due to my son having looser poos and the fact many have fruit content in them. I feel they are overpriced at the present in supermarkets

I was unaware, I like the idea of chilled baby food but am yet to decide if this will change my future shopping choices.

She adored all the desert options, particularly the coconut one.

I have a severe apple allergy, and so I had to have other family members give her almost all of the products.

I would probably get the deserts, as my daughter loved them. However the consistency of the savouries was a bit watery and so she found it difficult to self feed.

At it's price point no. If cheaper I would for those starting weaning.

I will not change the way that I shop as I was not overly impressed with the pouches. I find that the food I make at home is better.

Even though my daughter normally eats everything in sight she was not really impressed with the flavours and actually just liked the apple flavour best.

I feel that the flavours were a bit too unusual and I feel that the company are trying a bit too hard to be 'different'. They would do better if they created more common recipes as these are tastes that children like more. I tasted the pouches myself and was quite unimpressed with the flavours.

I would not buy the pouches as I feel that it is easier to make the food at home or use jars which do not need to be kept refrigerated. I feel that the pouches are impractical unless you are only giving your child food at home near the fridge. I also feel that it is rather expensive considering what it is.

Sadly I would not recommend the pouches as my daughter was not impressed with the flavours or texture.

I wasn't aware of there being chilled pet food, but then I don't have a pet! I do like the idea of the baby food being fresh but it would only really change my shopping habits if the price was competitive against other baby food brands.

My baby seemed to like the lentil, sweet potato, carrot and apple flavour the best, and ate all of that one.

I think some of the recipes need a bit of a re-think. My baby didn't seem keen on the 'carrot, pumpkin, apple and beetroot' or the 'cucumber, kiwi, kale, spinach, apple and banana'. I think probably because it was quite an odd combination of sweet and savoury flavours. Personally I like to give my baby some savoury food first, then give her some fruit based puree (or yogurt) for pudding, so I found the mixed savoury and sweet combinations quite odd. I'd be more inclined to buy the pouches if there was a separate selection of savoury and sweet pouches I think.

Although I like the freshness of the product, if I was to purchase the product in the supermarket it would have to be competitively priced against other baby food brands.

I think as a first baby food yes. I would say though that for older babies the pouches aren't going to be filling enough (my baby is 9 months old and would want at least 2 pouches if I was giving those) and the texture is too bland / smooth for older babies.

Just wanted to add re: the pricing of the pouches, the producers need to bear in mind that the majority of mothers will still be on maternity leave / pay when their babies are being weaned, so cost of food is often a significant issue.

No but I'm not really sure of the relevance, I don't feed my baby what I feed my dog? It won't change the way I shop for my baby (or my dog)

Definitely need more texture, it's essentially a watered down smoothie. Even as a very first food this is too thin and lacking texture. Also too sweet and fruit based. Perhaps more savoury combos and addition of meat or grains?

4. Knowing that My First Savsé is never heat pasteurised, would you purchase My First Savsé if it was widely available in supermarkets, and why? 

No. Chilled pouches are not convenient, it's as easy to make my own puree to take out with me. I would only have pouches with me in case I was home late and couldn't find something appropriate for the baby to eat.

5. Would you recommend My First Savsé baby food to a friend or family member, and why?

No. They are too thin and lacking in texture, and too reliant on fruit to sweeten them and make them appealing. Babies will eat almost anything if it's sweet, and to be honest that's not what I want as a parent.

I did know about the chilled pet food but this won't change my shopping habits. I use pouches as an emergency if I'm caught short and the fact these have to remain chilled restricts this.

Too sweet - apple was a key ingredient in most of the pouches and I don't like the dependency on sweet flavours. The price seems rather high too.

Also all are smooth which isn't great for older babies.

As others have mentioned there could be more savoury options. Comparing them to others I would consider them to be much the same I would use them for convenience if we were out and about

I did know about chilled pet food, I hadn't really thought about chilled baby food. I would think if I saw this in the shop I would buy some.

More savoury flavours, all seemed sweet to taste but that's in line with most baby foods in the market. The taste of them is definitely superior to most current offerings.

I would purchase it yes, but alongside traditional products as the need to keep it chilled renders it useless as something to sling in the nappy bag on a day out. Also, smaller sized pouches would be good as my baby is a long way off finishing a whole one in one sitting which feels like a waste.

I would, the flavour combinations are good, different from what is currently available and we didn't have any digestion issues like others have done. My baby really enjoyed them!

I didn't know this as I do not have any pets. But unfortunately unless it was something I frequently went past like the milk for example I'd probably forget to purchase it so I doubt it would hangs my shopping habits.

My little one liked all of the pouches and he finished all the portions I have him.

I was disappointed with the night fruit content of the pouches, the labelling was very misleading as to what quantities the ingredients inside were. My little one normally does not eat nearly as much fruit as was contained in the pouches and as a result I had to give him only half the contents of the pouch to restrict the amount of sugar he was having. This meant I had to throw the rest away.
It would be nice to have some food marketed at the babies that do not have to have everything masked by sugar.

I don't feel without the science behind this decision being made clearer, the cost of the pouches would justify the claim.

No, I didn't know this. We don't have pets, so were oblivious to the existence of chilled pet foods.
I'd never looked for chilled baby food before so hadn't noticed it's absence. We have, however, occasionally bought chilled ready meals aimed at toddlers and older children, so I'm a bit surprised that there wasn't already chilled baby food available.
Will it change the way I shop? I might pick up some of the pouches my baby particularly liked if I see them in the shops, but on the whole, probably not.

The one with the coconut and cacao. The one with the beetroot in also went down very well.

For my baby's first tastes, especially vegetables, I was keen to avoid them being too sweet, so was specifically looking for baby foods low in sugar and without too much added fruit (so I'd have bought a pouch that was 100% carrot over one that was about 50:50 carrot and apple, for example).
Having said that, other baby food brands we've used also add large quantities of fruit into their savoury purees, so My First Savse doesn't seem unusual in having apple as the main ingredient in its savoury purees.
Also, just a note on the packaging - the storage instructions printed on the pouches weren't as clear as they could be. I knew from the e-mail about the product test that the pouches should be refrigerated. But the serving and storage instructions on the pouch don't clearly tell consumers that. Yes, it says "can be served straight from the fridge", yes, it says "Once removed from the fridge or opened eat within x hours", but no, it does not say clearly "keep refrigerated" or "put me in the fridge". Given that most pouches available are heat pasteurised and can be kept safely in cupboards until opened, putting a My First Savse pouch in the cupboard instead of the fridge would be a very easy mistake to make for someone unfamiliar with your brand.

I'm still unclear on the benefits of cold pressing compared to heat pasteurisation overall.
I see the claim about the cold pressed purée having more nutritional value, which is an attractive claim, but on the downside, it needs to be kept refrigerated, has a shorter shelf life both before and after it's opened (one pouch said it had to be used within 6 hours of opening, not long at all for a baby who's just started weaning), and the requirement to keep them chilled means that they're pretty much unusable as a convenient meal option on trips out.
Plus they're more expensive than the rival brands we normally buy.

5. Would you recommend My First Savsé baby food to a friend or family member, and why?

I would probably recommend the ones my baby liked best, but also mention the caveats about the need for refrigeration and the shorter shelf life once opened.

Too heavy on the apple, even when it wasn't the first ingredient listed on the front - the pouches are made to sound exotic and different but have around 50% apple in them and very little of the other ingredients.
Some of the pouches were too sloppy in consistency, the coconut one in particular would barely stay on the spoon.
A strange combination of sweet and savoury - I was a little confused what I should do with the ones that weren't purely fruit. They are neither a main course nor a dessert.
Other pouches offer more variety in flavours, more texture and more conventional recipes. Plus you can chuck them in a bag when out and not worry about keeping them chilled. I also found it quite annoying that one of the pouches had to be eaten within 6 hours - no point opening this at dinner time incase it wasn't finished as would go to waste.
4. Knowing that My First Savsé is never heat pasteurised, would you purchase My First Savsé if it was widely available in supermarkets, and why?
No. At £1.70 a pouch they are too expensive. Especially the apple only one - I could make a massive batch of stewed apples for this price! That they are not heat pasteurised isn't an important selling point to me.

No. The fact that that out of date pouches were sent and then no promised voucher materialised did not create a good impression. I think they are ridiculously overpriced for what they are, especially when the main ingredient is cheap apple. I also think they are only any good for babies just starting out on weaning. My hungry 10 month old tends to have a main meal and dessert - the odd combination of flavours in some of the pouches didn't really fit with this, only one pouch had anything more filling than fruit and veg in and that was the one that was out of date!

Knowing there is chilled baby food available and having tried this the way I shop for food for my baby will change as she really enjoyed these pouches and I really liked that they didn't contain any additives etc and are full of goodness.

I've never seen chilled pet food. The idea of having cat food in the fridge with the human food makes me feel a bit sick - although perhaps chilled cat food wouldn't have that distinctive smell.... I'm not sure what that has to do with baby food though? Baby food is just food, surely? I feed my baby the same normal foods that the rest of our family eats. I have seen kids' ready meals e.g. Annabel Karmel in the supermarket. I don't buy them though. I don't think chilled baby food pouches will change the way I shop. I do my shopping almost exclusively in Aldi so until they are sold in there, I won't be buying them.

My baby liked the Pear, Pea, Apple & Spinach. I was really surprised by this as I would have expected him to like the sweet fruit purees best. Then I checked the ingredients list! There is only 5% pea and 7% spinach in the pouch. I naively thought that the name of the blend would reflect the concentration of each ingredient (just as the order of ingredients on the packaging would reflect the concentration of each item). I thought that the name of the puree was very misleading. It is 88% fruit and yet it would be very easy to pick this up in the supermarket thinking it is at least 50% vegetable. This is not acceptable in my opinion - very very misleading, bordering on dishonest. It makes me think this brand is a bit shady and makes me not want to trust it.

We didn't ever receive a replacement pouch for the lentil blend that was out of date on receipt, so we didn't get to try that one.

My baby flat refused to eat the apple pouch. Because only one of each flavour was supplied, it is impossible to say whether he just didn't like it or he just wasn't hungry or didn't fancy it at that moment. I tried it to see if it was palatable (as it was the first flavour we tried and he wouldn't entertain it at all) - and it was delicious. I ate the whole pouch.

He also liked the coconut and cacao flavour at first, but only managed about half of it. Because of the short life of these products once opened, the rest ended up in the bin.

The flavours are overwhelmingly apple and banana-focussed. I can't abide the smell of processed banana. I wouldn't buy pouches with banana in, personally, but that's just my 'thing'. The flavours are all sweet. I would prefer some vegetable based options as I wouldn't want my baby to be tasting nothing but sweet flavours.

Having found out that the pouches retail for an eye-watering £1.70 each, I wouldn't buy them unless they were on a mega special offer. We are not on a budget particularly but I couldn't justify spending that sort of money on pureed apple. It would be more likely that seeing the pouches and their price tag would motivate me to buy a bag of apples and do it myself.

I wouldn't recommend them because I think their labelling is dishonest and their lack of ability to send products that are within the use-by date to testers doesn't give me confidence in them as a company. Their failure to follow up on promises to send a replacement pack also makes me think they are a bit of an amateurish set up. The idea of more nutritious baby food that is 'as good as home made' is quite interesting, but the execution is poor and it comes across as a gimmicky product overall. I am not sure what proof they have that their food is more nutritious than the mainstream pouch brands - it all seems a bit airy-fairy and just a way to justify charging double the usual price. I won't be buying their products in future.

I have read some of the other reviews and see that other testers had issues with the pouches causing digestive problems for their babies. I didn't have any problems of this kind with the pouches we tried.
