Are you looking to declutter, or have stuff you have been meaning to sell but haven’t got round to it yet? Selling regularly but not using eBay? This is the test for you!

We have been asked by the team at eBay, to find 1000 MNers to put them to the test and to share their feedback on a survey.

For this test we are specifically looking for UK Mumsnetters that never listed an item on eBay before (first time listers) and users that haven’t listed anything for the last 365 days.

What is eBay?
~ eBay is the world's biggest online marketplace; a place for buyers and sellers to come together and buy or sell almost anything!
~ A seller lists an item on eBay, from antiques to cars, books to sporting goods. The seller chooses to accept only bids for the item (an auction-style listing) or to offer the Buy It Now option, which allows buyers to purchase the item straight away at a fixed price.
~ In an online auction-style listing, the bidding opens at a price the seller specifies and remains on eBay for a certain number of days. Buyers then place bids on the item. When the listing ends, the buyer with the highest bid wins.
~ In a Buy It Now listing, the first buyer willing to pay the seller's price gets the item. Buying and selling on eBay is easy and it's fun.

Note:
All testers will need to create (or use their existing) eBay account and also have a PayPal account - if you don’t have an eBay account then you will need to create one before signing up.
All testers will need to be registered members of Mumsnet.
All testers will need to agree to list two items on eBay (for at least 14 days or more) which they would like to sell. We will send selected testers some guidance and support on how to add a listing.
Limited to 1000 testers. Sign up before 10th September at the latest (recruitment might close earlier than this). T&Cs apply - please read.
Listings must start between the 21st August and 30th September.

All testers will need to share feedback after they have completed their listing on a survey form (we will email you a link).

I switched from eBay to gumtree because of the fees. I cannot get my head round why anyone would use eBay these days when there are so many ways to sell things for free!

There are too many dishonest buyers. Ebay sides with the buyer. Even if the seller can prove it's been received in good order.

Lost a lot of money selling things on eBay.

Such a shame. Big eBay fan. Down to only a few hundred items on at present, school holidays and all.

Don't suppose I'd qualify as a new user or not having used in 365 days.

EBay fees have hiked, they still run promotions for low final value fees and lots of free listing so good if you save up stuff and blitz the selling. It is still a massive marketplace and even with fees i find i sell faster, for more money and if things go a bit pear shaped there is a bit of back up support (slightly varied on a case by case basis, but something is better than nothing and the frustration that can go with dealing face to face with a local buyer and no back up).

I'd also much rather post/ courier at my convenience rather than have people call at their convenience.

I used to use eBay for just this, to declutter. Haven't done it in years, because eBay changed - for the worse.

They stopped being a platform for personal sellers; they could make so much more from business sellers.

• fee structures changed (a big impact to fairly low-value used items)
  
• what you could charge for P&P was controlled (to less than it cost to send e.g. a heavy textbook)
  
• and then the final straw, sellers could not leave negative feedback even when the buyer was clearly taking you for a ride. And eBay always sided with the buyer.
  

It's all very well for eBay to come to Mumsnet looking for this type of seller, but this is precisely the type of seller that they drove away. I can't be the only user who abandoned them.

I'm another EBay fan here, even though the fees are quite high i much prefer the model of me sending items out instead of people coming to collect. I'm not a new user so can't sign up as I always have a load listed.

I've been wanting to try eBay for years and never had the guts as I've been so worried about unscrupulous buyers and potentially losing money. Not that I have anything valuable to sell, just clothes etc. Maybe I should just give it a go.

Gumtree and Facebook are far better in my experience. Ebay is for businesses now.

Anyone new to Ebay and thinking of signing up should first read the threads about losing time and money due to the high number of thieves who love the platform. They claim non-receipt of goods and get refunds. There's also an increase in people returning for a refund, despite accurate description and photos. Protect yourself with tracking - although some MN users say that doesn't always protect them - and certainly doesn't cut down the admin burden and hassle.

Hate Ebay. I was given a warning a while back, because I was selling an expensive item, I was getting flocks of messages from folk who wanted me to 'ring them so they could make an offer & pay cash' and I thought, forget this, and cancelled my listing. But because I had cancelled my listing and people had sent me their phone number, Ebay took this as 'Oh, she has sold this privately!' and sent me a load of really crappy emails!
The crappiest thing was, I hadn't even READ the messages people had sent me, and yet I was being penalised for it, saying I could lose my high status as a seller, all because other people were sending ME their phone numbers and addresses, and I hadn't even read or messaged them back.
Ebay USED to be great...now, its all business oriented, and I am much happier picking one day of the week when folk on facebook can come and buy from me, or even drop it off to them as I only post in local groups. All the money comes to me then, and if they don't like an item, they can give it back, or not take it with them, so no more "Oh, I never got my item, can I have a refund please!" rubbish you get from so many Ebay buyers :-( x
Maybe if Ebay went back to how it used to be...I would reconsider!

EBay got rid of sellers like 'us' when they stopped sellers leaving feedback and messed around setting maximum postage prices which were lower than royal mail parcel prices. It became more hassle than it was worth.

The buyers on eBay are getting worse and there is no seller protection, I no longer use it.

Loathe eBay for exactly the reasons given by PP. Because sellers can't give negative reviews you get tons of time wasters. I put three good quality items on sale. One bought and collected goods okay, although at a knockdown price. One bought the item, tried to negotiate down after having won auction, again at knockdown price. Then came to our house, decided they didn't want it after all (nothing wrong with it, just think they changed their minds). One bought the item and we never heard from them again. Because the idea is that it is supposed to be hassle free, it's really annoying having to try and prove that you never got the money and therefore eBay shouldn't get the commission.

I use local selling sites now. Massively better and much less hassle. Plus no commission for providing rubbish service. I think you probably get a better price and there are fewer time wasters as well.
