Birds Eye have teamed up with Mumsnet, to find 250 testers for their 20-minute meals. Selected testers were given a Birds Eye pack with a £5 Birds Eye voucher and a £10 supermarket voucher, so that they could cook and taste the 20-minute meals for themselves.

Here’s what Birds Eye have said: ‘Tea time can be a stressful part of the day and coming up with nutritious and tasty meals the kids will enjoy is not easy.

That’s why Birds Eye has teamed up with Toby and Roo, Honest Mum, Not Another Mummy Blog and London Dad to create a series of delicious and wholesome meals for the family to enjoy. And guess what, they genuinely only take 20-minutes to prep, cook and serve!

Birds Eye frozen chicken is always made with 100% chicken breast, barn-reared chickens, and no artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.’

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

To be honest, its not something i think about when buying chicken but obviously its a positive thing and another great thing about this product.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

Yes it was very tender and well flavoured. I was surprised at the variety available

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

Yes, there lots of options and all were good value, I have also now seen how versatile their chicken can be and so even better value.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

I already knew it was 100% chicken and so I do feel better using it more regularly for dinners for the whole family

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

Yes this is very good to know and does encourage me further to buy birds eye

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Definitely! I think now I have seen the variety of birds eye chicken and then also what you can do with it as well as the breeding and quality details it is going to appear quite regularly within the family meals.

I was really impressed with the chicken options I purchased and the recipes we tried it also inspired us to not just 'bung it in the oven and have it with chips' nights.

1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
Yes - we loved it! We made the chicken tacos & they went down a treat! The chicken was easy to cook, well portioned for little ones & enjoyed by all of us.
2. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
Yes - although I'd definitely maximise any offers that were on - i.e 2 products for £3, etc - to get the most for our money.
3. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Definitely, I'd considered frozen chicken products to be a poor choice nutritionally, so wouldn't purchase them often, even though they save me a lot of time & my son enjoys them. Now I've read more about the products & seen the healthy recipes they can be enjoyed as part of, they are a regular on the shopping list.
4. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Absolutely - we always buy barn or free range eggs, so would want the same standard for chickens we buy for food too.
5. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Yes! We've tried a few of the recipes now & really enjoyed them!

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

Yes we did. No complaints at all.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

I think it is so-so for value. I managed to get the chicken on offer which helped.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

I am actually not concerned if they used chicken breast, thigh or drumstick meat. However if this means with birds eye, it's only real chicken and not the sinew etc then its a major plus. Definitely a thumbs up with no additives.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

I think I would be happier if it was free range because barn-reared sounds restrictive. I buy free range eggs so i wish the product could be the same. I must add though that it hadn't occured to me before that whole chickens etc could be caged!
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

I will be, i don't know how often, but as a backup for when I really don't have enough time.
Don't think I'll use the recipes supplied however as they were quite costly and could do with alot of tweaking.

1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the product. Having memories of soggy drummers types of frozen battered/breaded poultry I was very sceptical coming into this test. I expected the find the products at best tasteless at worse horrid. However, the products we tried were really nice, pleasant taste and texture (I was very worried about texture due to childhood memories of pretty unpleasant processed poultry).

2. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?
The "cheapness" of the products (for Birdseye and other types of similar items) was one of the things that put me off and make me feel that the quality would be poor. However having tried them I do now consider them to be good value for money, as they were actually enjoyable.

3. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?
Yes definitely. I had never bothered looking into the nutrition of this type of product before as I had just assumed it would be poor. However, this test has opened my eyes and reading the packets has changed my mind. These sorts of products will now be included in our meal rotations.

4. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?
Yes, it does. Again, largely due to the price, I always assumed frozen chicken products would have come from battery chickens. To know this isn't the case make me feel a lot better about purchasing them in the future.

5. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?
Yes, I would. After coming in from work I am always keen to find meals that are nutritious, enjoyable and quick. A particular favourite from the recipe cards in our house was the taco boats. I love the versatility of these, and the way they can be tailored to different tastes, without needing to do a lot of extra prep and cooking. We have similar meals quite often but had never used "chicken dippers" before. These went down a treat and I will definitly make these again.

1.) Yes. The Birds Eye chicken was enjoyed by all. We purchased various chicken fillets (chargrilled/bbq and breadcrumbed) and made Wraps, which everyone filled themselves with their choice of Birds Eye chicken, salad and dressings. Everyone thought them tasty and delicious.
2.) Absolutely good value. They also went a long way, perfect for feeding a big family.
3.) Yes. Its important to me to know the content and the fact that the products are 100% chicken breast would sway my purchase.
4.) Absolutely. The thought of battery farming is totally abhorrent. This reassurance is so important.
5.) I would absolutely purchase Birds Eye chicken again for the family. In fact , in particular, these wraps are now a weekly staple that is looked forward to with relish.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

Yes. Like a previous reviewer said,I was fairly sceptical coming to this test based on memories of bland, processed frozen chicken products. We were all pleasantly surprised, even my very fussy 7 year old enjoyed them.

Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

Fairly good value - portions were a little small but on the whole can't really complain given the price and quality.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes . Although I am not concerned whether it is breast, leg or thigh meat , I can be confident that it contains real chicken and no "fillers ".

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

Yes- but I would rather the chicken be free range if possible. I do try and consider the conditions animals have been kept in when buying meat but realise free range would be more expensive.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

Definitely, especially when time is short and I'm in need of a quick and easy tasty dinner. However, I don't think I'd be making a lot of the recipes supplied too often . They sound delicious but feta , olives, dashi and Mirin are not cheap everyday ingredients (to me).

Yes, we had chicken burgers and the children were desperate for another one! I also have the chargrilled chicken breast and am looking forward to those this week too.
  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

I don't really buy frozen chicken products but it certainly seemed to be a reasonable price.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Definitely, I don't like processed chicken but they were really good and felt like eating actual chicken. Makes me feels ok feeding it to the children too as a quick meal before evening clubs.
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

To a point. I try to buy free range eggs but only if they are available, so yes, I can feel a little less guilty.

Yes I was surprised that it tasted really nice, and my son even made a comment on how much he liked the chicken. I made taco boats.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

The bags of chicken dippers were very good value and I was impressed you could get bigger family sized bags.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes, although I found it interesting that the ingredients list says that some were as low as 40% chicken. I'm guessing this depends on the crispy coating used.

  1. The non-fussy members of our family really enjoyed the chicken. DD commented how juicy it was! DS did eat some of it - which is good as he isn't great with food he hasn't tried numerous times before.

  1. I was surprised at the price of the chicken products and thought it was very good value.

  1. The fact that they are made with 100% chicken breast is reassuring as otherwise I would have thought they were good value because cheaper cuts were used. Probably my fault at choosing the crispy chicken but thought that the 50% of chicken in each portion was lower than I would expect.

  1. Yes, it is reassuring that the chicken are always barn-reared. This is the minimum standard of the other chicken we normally purchase.

  1. I will probably buy some more Birds Eye chicken as it was useful to have it in the freezer. We also have some chicken Kievs left to eat.

As an aside I thought the suggested recipes from the bloggers were great. I let DD flick through them all before we went shopping and it was a close call between the taco boats and the posh burgers. The lemon mayonnaise and avocado definitely helped to make the burger more special.

  1. Yes, it's nice to know it hasn't got too much rubbish in it, although I would never think of it as a health food, but fine for once or twice a week.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

Yes, I didn't eat a whole piece myself but I had a token taste and it was fine (and I'm really fussy about cheap meat). DS, who was the actual taste tester, loved it.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

Yes, I bought a lot of food with the five pound voucher they gave us - Sainsburys had a special offer on the dippers.

  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Yes, I assumed it would be grim mechanically recovered or preformed stuff, but it was actually quite "real".

  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

A bit reassuring, but "barn reared" is a pretty low bar. I aim for free range or ideally organic chicken normally, and I'd be happier if it was UK sourced - I'm not sure where it actually comes from but I suspect it's Thailand.

  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

As above, I'm a bit suspicious about the provenance of the chicken. However, with the varying dietary preferences of my family, frozen portions of food that can be cooked individually are a godsend - I can mix and match carnivore and veggie alternatives at the drop of a hat with no waste. And DS adored it, so I probably will keep a packet in the freezer for convenience regardless of my ethical qualms.

Thanks MN and Birdseye, DC benefitted from me being forced out of my teatime rut.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birdseye chicken?

We made the tacos with the chicken dippers. The kids love chicken dippers anyway but it was nice to be able to make a meal that is adults enjoyed as well out of a product which would usually be classed as 'kid food' in this house.
  1. Do you think Birdseye chicken is good value?

I do think it is good value although some of the recipes provided did bump the price up a bit the actual chicken was good value and I spent no more than I would usually spend on a family meal.
  1. Dies knowing that Birdseye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast with no additives or preservatives- and that it is packed with protein - make you more likely to buy it in the future?

TBH before I might have reached for a more of a value brand purely going on price but knowing this I would be happy to pay a little bit extra (and it really is a little) to get the better quality more nutritious version.
  1. Does knowing that all Birdseye chickens are always barn reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

TBH i don't usually look at the ethics of how the chickens were raised when buying a product but it's nice to know that Birdseye take this seriously and it makes the company seem like a trusted moral company.
  1. Would you feed Birdseye chicken to your family again?

I would have always had a Birdseye product in the freezer before doing this trail the difference is I won't just see it as something I can quickly feed the kids when time is of the essence but thanks to the handy recipes supplied I will be able to feed the whole family a tasty nutritious meal in 20 mins!
Thank you Mumsnet and Birdseye for the chance to take part in this product trial. I now know when I'm sitting in rush hour traffic after a hard day at work as long as I have a Birdseye product in the freezer I have dinner time covered 👍

Firstly thanks Mumsnet and Birds Eye for giving us the opportunity to test this , it's something I've never bought before and to be honest was very skeptical about.

  1. Did you enjoy the taste of Birds Eye chicken?

Personally I thought it was ok. Both of the children loved it. Husband and other adult family members found it rather tasteless.

  1. Do you think Birds Eye chicken is good value?

Reasonably so when it's on an offer. I did think that the breast portions were quite small.
  1. Does knowing that Birds Eye chicken is made with 100% chicken breast, with no additives or preservatives - and that it’s packed with protein - make you more likely to purchase them in future?

Not sure this is a game changer for me. My main consideration when buying meat is welfare and where it's from rather than which bit we are eating!
  1. Does knowing that all Birds Eye chickens are always barn-reared and never caged reassure you about the product?

Yes and no, I think I'd be more reassured if the chicken was British or at the very least European with regards to welfare.
  1. Would you feed Birds Eye chicken to your family again?

It's a very quick and accepted protein source so perhaps as a very occasional thing.
I wasn't particularly impressed with the meal ideas though and I reckon the birds eye nutritionist needs to look at them again with regards to salt content. I made the Great Greek Chicken Pittas for a family meal. The portion would most definitely exceed the daily salt recommendations for any child at one meal, no mention of salt on the information just a bit of waffle about fibre and calcium from feta!!! I think thats a pretty crap recipe personally...
Tasted fine but the suggested portion of feta was ridiculous I didn't think it was adequate for a meal so made some spicy potatoes to go with itSmile
The taco boat recipe tasted fine & was very kid friendly. The burger recipe was more a serving suggestion rather than a recipe, it was fine. Couldn't bring myself to make the omelette katsu thing!!!
We enjoyed trying some new flavours, thanks again for including us in the trial.
